The search function works wonders. But Garmin works, as does Viewranger.

It's only absolutely free if you are on an unlimited data package, otherwise it could be quite costly.
Just my 2p's worth!!

The amaze app is free, the other two posted apps are not free, I thought that would have been obvious to a poorly trained gibbon, clearly not

Garmin XT works well, there have been 2 software updates since the 5800 came out and it is working without any bugs (at least none I have noticed).
Not as user friendly as TomTom, but then at least it is compatible.

Another vote for Garmin XT here - plus CPW were selling old copies for £18 a few weeks back, not sure if they are still available but if you don't mind a slightly out of date map then a bargain..

Tom Tom 6 on Nokia 5800
At the moment I have a Nokia E65 for which i have a TOMTOM 6 memory card. I have ordered a Nokia 5800 on the understanding that it has a built in sat nav and gps receiver as with the E65 i have to have a separate GPS receiver, which is a pain. From reading different reviews now, it seems that I have been misled... I have a package that gives me unlimited internet along with my minutes and text, so can I get voice turn by turn navigation on this phone as it stands? Alternatively can I just put my TOMTOM 6 card into my new phone?? Please help. I've been told that there's no stock until the end of the week, so I'm hoping if this is something that can't be done FREE then I will cancel my order.... HELP!!

I'm going to sticky something about satnav on the 5800, no-one ever uses the damn search...
If you want to check if a program will run on a new phone, then check the makers support pages. This will have the compatibility list of phones. Granted, it's not always up to date, but at least check before asking elsewhere (and not even bothering to search).
In short, no, tomtom does not work, it hasn't been updated since the E65 (or something older), so obviously it's not going to work with a new touchphone from Nokia.
Amaze might be free, but it's pretty substandard compared to almost any paid for GPS software. Plus there is nothing about it supporting S60 V5 (the 5800 operating system).
Yes the 5800 does have a built in reciever. You just need to get a program which works with it.
I.e. Garmin XT, and Nokia Maps (Nokia Maps is preinstalled on the phone - you need to pay subscription charges for turn by turn - though you get 3 months free trial).

Nokia Maps is built into the 5800, and if you pay extra for the navigation licence it includes full turn-by-turn instructions for both driving and walking. You can buy the licence within the app, either by credit card or phone bill. You can buy a very short term licence if you want to try it out. There's a full tutorial for Nokia Maps on the 5800 here:

Garmin XT is the other one available for the 5800, and no doubt lots of other companies will be releasing third party sat nav apps over the coming year.

wayfinder
I'm waiting for Wayfinder.. I used it with my e90, and it works like a charm. Even here in the states, it has a very thorough location database, and if it didn't have something you were looking for, theres a quick form you could fill out to report it. I've been using the trial of Nokia Maps, and not too excited about it... too many clicks to actually navigate.

tom tom 5800
I have recently upgraded to the nokia 5800 from a nokia n95, I have managed to re install most of the software except for the tom tom software (v6.02). This installs however the program will not execute. Some time later I installed the 6.01 and this will execute but some of the features are not available. After a long period on forums i was told that the tom tom software is not compatable with the touch screen. Bugger!
Thought I would mention this as dont want anyone to get the phone just for navigation.

Garmin XT works for me in Australia. I'm sure there would be maps for UK.
You could also subscribe to Nokia Maps V2 instead.
