Samsung Omnia HD launches

Samsung just made their pitch for the Symbian top-end with the announcement of the Omnia HD (a.k.a. the i8910). This features a full touch interface running S60 5th Edition, a 3.7" AMOLED display and full 720p HD video recording. More below, and through the morning.

Read on in the full article.

Apart from the LED flash - not good for night shots compared to Xenon. No real excuse in not putting a Xenon in.

Anyway, this does the set the bar for the 8MP device Nokia are releasing this week. Knowing Nokia they will compete withthis Samsung across multiple devices rather than one do it all devices. The noteworthy features Nokia needs to compete with (aside from 8MP) are the HD video recording, the compass and the battery size. And they really need a Xenon flash!

Come on Nokia, if anyone can top this, you can...

Samsung Omnia HD

Impressive hardware specifications. Including a very promising Symbian OS version. Though a bit too touchy since a keyboard lacks ;-). If this one comes with a Samsung-nized "Nokia PC suite" and decent Maps software you can bet that it will be a hit once they fix their videorecording bugs.

Steve: nice news flow, keep it coming ;-)

Hey lets not forget the 3.7" AM Oled display. Probably one of the biggest selling point for this device

At 123mm x 58mm, this is a slab of a device. Something very fundamental ahead of all the tech specs, a device like this is basically no good to me at all if I need a backpack to carry it around.

This is the same problem suffered by the iPhone that is turning it into a feminine phone, the fact that ladies usually carry a bag big enough.

Two things that come top of my list and new phones are failing and regressing on, pocketability and durability. It's the specification race now being more important than pragmatism.

New Phones

I really hope Nokia is going to announce a new phone. So far, I haven't seen anything besides the N97 that approaches the OmniaHD...

Ease of use/GUI is the kicker. We need video!

As someone else suggested, I think Nokia are trying to spread their announcements throughout the year to get maximum coverage.

its no i phone, hardly gonn capture the public imagination now is it?
The Omnia HD's main feature is its ability to shoot high definition video.

The iPhone can't even shoot video.

Os

I hear the device is running Symbian OS 5th Edition (Touch). I have not seen data on whether the phone will allow the user to install other software--I can't imagine that it would prohibit such installations, but...

Anyone have any additional data? Videos?

Obviously, you could imagine it, because you asked.

ANY posts that even look like they are from iphone fanboys will be deleted. Having just had to delete around 10 due to it starting flames, it's getting to be very annoying and pushing the tolerance level.

So please, do AAS a favour. Lets not turn it into a kids battleground, and if you see a pointless fanboy post, don't reply to it. You are feeding the trolls. If it's annoying you, PM an active mod who will delete said offending post.

I agree, I am hugely interested in this device, but the size is going to be a huge obstacle.

But still, everything else looks great, and I especially like the fact it's got the compass. And a 1500 battery. And use OLED so it should last a decent time...

For me, this is the big news this year. Presuming nothing else comes out (The N97 really doesnt interest me), and the build quality is ok, I'll be moving ship.
