ProfiMail: A look at the cutting edge of S60 email

ProfiMail has been around on all the Symbian OS sub-platforms for longer than I can remember. But did you know that the developers have been making great strides recently with full on IMAP Idle support and better integrated file and attachment browsers? Nick Anstee's been using ProfiMail for ages on his Nokia E90 and presents details of his personal email client quest, together with a detailed list of pros and cons for this quirky application from Lonely Cat Games.

There will be no doubt to anyone who has used Profimail, that it is an outstanding application.
But I dont think this review would be complete without mentioning Profimail's online license checking function.
It is a major turnoff for many users , although it doesn't bother me too much.
At least Lonely Cat Games is kind enough to put this in their disclaimer in the more recent versions.

I'm waiting for the day that LCG will imput an Imap feature that determines how many historically received' emails one can download OR set up a date to start downloading from just as is possible with Gmail POP. I cant download all the thousands of emails in my mailbox that I received since creating a Gmail account in 20005 - that will chaw all my data plus fill up my memory. Great application otherwise except for this glitch.

The author mentions that he also put the new Nokia Email application through it paces according to his needs.

I am quite curious to know what he thought of it.

I started using Profimail when I bought my 6600 and I still use it on my N82. Profimail is the best mobile based email client in the world. it is, undoubtedly, one of the few essential apps that have become an inseparable part on an s60 phone.

In response to unregistered with Profimail you can put a limit on the number of emails you download in advance settings.

I have to agree, great program. It's saved my butt at work a lot.

I must agree this app has stayed to be essential apps even now

i like this app 'i've used it for ages and it does all that you want .
only thing i dont like about is it looks ugly like most of LCG apps

This is one of the best apps for UIQ3, although the native email UIQ3 client is not bad...but Profimail is just WAY faster. The only problem is indeed the fugly interface

Its quite strange that the Profimail version in the review screenshot is 2.93, this prompted me to go to Program Update and to my surprise the latest version is still 2.91. I've also verfied on www.lonelycatgames.com and even on the site the latest version is 2.91. Where did you guys get ver 2.93 from?

I have just received this exciting information from LCG:

"About this: The user interface looks a bit dated and it does not follow the theme or style of the other applications on the phone.
Soon it's history, in few days there'll be skinned look on S60 3rd ed."

That is going to be really cool.

bheetebrij: The new Nokia Email client has a nice interface but in truth offers very little additional functionality for me than the built in standard client and it is a lot slower, so in some respects a step back.

Profimail is a reason to use S60/Symbian. It is nailed on class app. I don't care what it looks like as long as I get my mails.

It still bothers me that even E90 hasn't html-emil support, but in my opinion ProfiMail is really ugly with its outdated UI look. If it's really going to change to Symbian UI then E90 is back on shopping list.

Thanks for the article, I am evaluating Profimail at the moment and in general do like what I see. The interface is a bit non-E-series alike, but it seems that they intend to change that. What I don't like is the fact that when I click on a link in an email it fires up a Profimail internal browser and not the default browser. This internal browser has some clumsy elements and can't for instance not handle a simple site like twitter. So far I have not found a way to simply launch my default browser and see the links clicked in there.
