E71 gets a big thumbs up from The Register

Well, at least they didn't give the E71 to Nokia-hater Andrew O.... Writer Dave Oliver gives the new E71 his seal of approval, concluding that it's "a brilliantly efficient piece of technology that does pretty much everything you might want it to do and it does it all extremely well. Like a technological servant of sorts, it serves up its many excellent facilities and a host of other titbits with a minimum of fuss - and no small amount of style."

Read on in the full article.

Guys, Andrew O is not a Nokia hater...he does say what others fear to say. So whatever happened to the Hildon UI!

I can't figure out if Andrew Orlowski has turned into a fanboy or is just trolling. Whatever it is, I just don't bother reading his stuff anymore.

Same here, I remember reading a few of his articles some time ago and thinking 'thats not right' about some of the bits.

I have a feeling Andrew probably rather enjoys it. I picture him sitting, in a high backed leather chair, in his evil-overlord hide out (ex-MOD bunker maybe) twirling his moustache with one hand while stroking a white Persian cat with the other thinking, 'hmmm... who can I rile next?' before despatching minions to do his bidding... [Hmm maybe getting carried away there ]

And I think most of the time he has a point, its just there's often another side to the story too. Makes for entertaining reading, and make you think either way.

He's not a Nokia hater, he's an everything hater. He's laid into practically every type of device and format, sometimes in very vicious terms. You should see the withering stuff he said about Apple fans in the wake of the iPhone launch last year, and he's said equally nasty stuff about all of iPhones' rivals too.

I've probably said this before, but Orlowski reminds me of Phil Daniels' character from the BBC drama "holding on", the restaurant critic who ends up unable to eat food as he finds so much to hate about it.

LOL, yes of course, he's just trying to fight the system. Like Green Day.

...but a good journalist would at least try to tell the other side, if only to put their point in context.

If he's deliberately writing unbalanced stories in order to annoy people, that makes him more of a shock jock than a journalist. It's verging on troll territory really, which is not something anyone should get paid for.

Genuinely thought-provoking journalism makes you pleased you read it, and eager to read more. AO pieces over the last few years just get me down and make me wish I'd never read them.

To return to the real story - Nokia have obviously done a great job on E71. Can't wait for the E91 :-)

Someone said they have ordered from nokia - but lead time is 3 weeks.

Looks like the E71 might be a lot more popular than Nokia thought, its certainly winning over a lot of people.

Looks to be one of those simply 'good' phones that nokia produce every now and then.

Hasnt been one for a while, the N95 just missed the mark due to the battery.

How's the browser on the E71? I posted on the other N95 vs iphone thread that the S60 browser doesn't really cut it for full web pages becasue it takes so long to render the page -- even on WiFi or full HSDPA signal.

Is it any better on E71?

Try loading a page like guardian.co.uk, or someting equally weighty.

Its actually quite good in this department. I noted in the E66 review (for which you can read same as on E71) that the browser rendered pages quicker compared to the N95.

Exclamation Hildon

Hildon is used as the UI in the N800/N810 tablets.
