JoikuSpot Light gets WEP!

JoikuSpot, the phenomenal little utility that turns your smartphone into a Wi-Fi hotspot for your laptop and other hardware, just got significantly better, with the release of a new beta (1.2) that supports WEP encryption. Previously, your little Wi-Fi hotspot had to be open to allcomers, with predictable results. (via The Symbian Blog)

Read on in the full article.

Wep ?

Does implementing WEP have any meaning ? WEP equals to open AP, cracking WEP protected AP takes max few minutes (see videos on youtube for example).

So what??
For just avoiding unwanted connections and data transfer its more than enough. I can't imagine anyone trying to hack to 3.5G hotspot when he don't know how long will it be open and where would it be in next 10min

WEP is insecure

Sorry folks, WEP-encryption really helps nothing. The first beta crashed a lot and the connection was slow. So far, we need stability, more speed and wpa-encryption - after all, the speed is the main reason to switch from bluetooth to wlan-connections (hsdpa can be faster than bluetooth). Otherwise you could use data cables for the pc-connection to the phone.

It's still free - to quote their web page...

'Take the 90 day trial option. It will connect to internet and confirm it. The program is FREE, but we want to make sure betas expire some day. A new version will be introduced before 90 days has passed.'

Let's slow down here folks, and be a little understanding. This is the second update in a couple weeks- last update to 1.1 gave us increased stability. I've had zero issues with JoikuSpot since that update, other than the fact that when I open it up in a hotel or airport, I've got fifteen clients online in so many seconds...

I think the JS team are progressing really well with this beta, and I think the criticism of WEP is valid, but not very justified. As others said, sure it might take no time at all for some to crack WEP, but I feel they're on the right track and we could all cut them just a bit of slack.

Is the commenter who is still having stability issues with JoikuSpot with 1.1, or are you still using the original beta? You state that the original beta was unstable- there have been some improvements to this since the first beta. They're working on it. Ease up.

Really, I think they're progressing quite nicely with this, and some of the criticism here is a bit harsh... Constructive criticism is one thing, but come on.

Phone Handset Why doesn't Joiku start on my N95 ??

I think Joiku's an excellent idea. Does anyone have an idea why my non-operator N95, in the Netherlands, doesn't start up v1.1 ? The previous version wouldn't start either.

Joiku says it I might be sharing only thru WAP, not the internet connection. But I don't even get to run the tool...
