E61i, WiFi dongle...and HELL!! LOL (Do I need to enable ICS on the PC?)

Been getting the notorious "no gateway reply" message.

After hours of trying to access the net via the E61i (via a wifi dongle on the PC, not a router) it occurred to me that I need to set up ICS?

Is that correct?

Many thanks for helping out a wifi noob!

(Also can't even get them to connect if using WPA and infastructure....only adhoc and WEP?? Even when connected, still get gateway error.)

Just connect the E61i by USB cable, and use PCSuite, and use the connect to internet button, and it works... and works well!

PC suite connects the computer to the net using the phone as a modem he is trying to go the other way and for some reason it's not as easy.

I have mine set up in a similar fashion. My net is wired Lan to the computer and I have a wireless card in the computer.
You are creating an Adhoc network. Now I have gotten it to work to some extent and my issues are from the fact Im using a linksys card which I detest their products but another story there.

Now you will find tutorials on mocrosofts site on how to set them up and well they aren't even close to what is needed to make it work. The biggest thing they ignore telling you is that you need to go in and turn on DHCP.

Basically double click your incoming net icon (win XP).
Click properties
Click advanced tab.
Click allow other computers to use this connection. (that is if this option shows up)
Click settings
Check the box that says DHCP. This is the missing step in all of them.

Now I have seen people just highlight the two highspeed connections and bridge them. Well I have had really bad luck with that. I lost my lan connection for a week cause windows screwed up something in the process. I went back to scratch and even reloaded all the TCPip etc etc and finally got it working after changing settings back and forth many times windows finally reset it and it works.

There are some other steps but that's just what they don't tell you. I have mine going and it works intermittently. the linksys software for the card interferes allot and causes issues. Also I haven't figured out how to keep the connection alive. If you stop surfing it will disconnect and it takes a minute to get the card up and going again and then to finally connect.

I'll put in a wireless router soon to replace the adhoc as it's more reliable than the linksys card.
