MiniGPS idea stolen by my operator.

As the topic says.
Just yesterday i discovered that the name of the city i'm in is displayed in the top right corner of the background image.
The image itself is not modified.

What's new about this? Vodafone D2 (Germany) does this since at least three years... The current phone area codes of the region you are in are transmitted via cell broadcast and shown on your phones display.

It seems that in some countries the "cell information" was not transmitted. Indeed in Australia, Telstra had it from the start, not to sure about Vadafone but Optus only turned it on totally a couple of years ago, before that, it used to pop up when you got near new towers they had acticvated to assist in the tech side of things.

If you don't want it.... Menu>tools>settings>network>cell info display(on/off)

Cheers

By the way: Having it switched on all the time costs A LOT of battery capacity, so you'd better switch it off.

In Greece Telestet has this option from the begining

Telestet (one of the four operators) had a charging program called "Telestet City Lines " with low charges on your city calls.
With this cell broadcast..... you could see, in which town you were (in Greece), under your operators name.......

Well, we have that but only when I go to the International Airport here in the Philippines, my old 7110, instead of the profile name displays Welcom to NAIA, as if I cared. Now I know how to turn it off. But turning it off will disable my miniGPS right???

MiniGPS uses the cell info which also the net monitor shows you. Without the cell info GSM networks would not work, so you can't switch it off...
What you can switch off is "Cell Broadcast". This is a service by your network provider and has got nothing to do with the cell information that is always received by your phone. Cell broadcast eats up a lot of battery capacity, at least with my older Nokia phones, so I would recommend you to switch it off if you don't need it.
