Fax on 9290
Hello there again!
I am attempting to receive a fax on my 9290 and having a problem.
The fax machine is getting thru to the 9290 but the 9290 just rings and rings and the internal fax modem never picks up and receives the fax.
Also, if I try to send a fax from the 9290 it just sits in the outbox.
There is a modem built into the 9290, right?
Am I wrong about this?

Answered!
I have answered my own question with some careful probing at T-mobile and Nokia.
Wow is it hard to get a straight answer out of T-mobile.
Their technicians are doing the best they can but talk about not being forthcoming.

First of all check that your provider's cell net is able to cope with data/fax calls. Second check that this service is enabled on you cell number. Third try to send faxes.
If you have done these two steps allready check that your 9210(i) has all the fax related software that it needs to deal with fax calls!

Aegeas -
So, what was the outcome/solution to your problem? There are too few 9290's represented not to inform the few of us

Response
After poking around at them it turns out that the 9290 handles faxes like emails. If you are on the T-mobile(voicestream/Powertel) network then you have to add the Fax service from T-mobile at 9.99 per month. What then happens is that T-mobile gives you access to a server that catches incoming faxes to a dummy phone number and saves them for you. You then go out to that server as if it were a dialin connection and download the faxes as if they were emails. It is clunky but functional. When you get ready to send a fax from your 9290 it appears in your outbox and then is sent to that dummy service and they actually fax it to the number you specified in the fax message.
I understand text muddies things up a bit so if you would like further explanation post back and I will be glad to clarify.

Thanks for the explanation. I too could never figure it out even with the help of T-Mobile/Nokia. I was only able to get to the point where I needed to pay the extra $9.99/month  I guess I stopped listening at that point (I don't send/receive THAT many faxes).
Instead, I use a unified messaging site www.uReach.com and download my faxes as emails and view on my 9290. I send faxes via just writing an email to a certain fax address within ureach.com. Works real well for me.
Oh! I should add... I do not work for UReach.com, just a happy customer!

faxes and 9290
the annoying part is that back in the 9000il days with powertel (tmobile), is that you paid 2.99 for a data line and 2.99 for a fax line. both of those numbers went straight to your phone! no servers nothing. you could have 3 direct numbers to your phoone for 6 dollars more a month! i guess they started this dial-to-que stuff now....
thats a pain..

Yeah, when I activated this function my operator gave 2 other numbers:fax and data. I have never been asked to use the data number,it's useless!

I think you should confirm settings from your operator after which they"ll give you the fax mobile number different from the voice calls. Your modem will shall recognize the fax number and fax messages will be sent through.

i got the fax service
Hey Aegeas,
I just got the fax and data line services from tmobile for my 9290. They do give you 2 additional lines straight to the phone. There is no "POLL" service. I can connect straight from my 9290 to another fax number without going through anykind of "polling service".
If you have anymore questions about this feature, let me know,

Curious
Well given what you have said why is there an FAX MODEM entry under the "Extras" area with an option to "activate" it? I note that it says the connection type is "cable 57600" and that the status is "inactive" by default. I want to think that it is an option where you can receive a fax without additional services from T-Mobile. Anyone else care to guess??
