6110 Navigators fall foul of branding bug

In yet another example of why you shouldn't go for network-branded devices, it seems that Vodafone's firmware for the Nokia 6110 Navigator has a major issue with the core navigation function and that they're recalling many handsets. (via IntoMobile)

This bug is not reserved to branded version, is a lack of attention from nokia in all 6110, they have the wrong reg key.

This is NOT a vodafone problem, it affects simfree handsets as well.
The problem only affects 6110's produced in the latter part of last year.

Nokia decided to upgrade the Route 66 maps from the original 2006 versions to the 2007 version, sadly they didn't think to change the licence key as well.
So the rogue 6110, feature 2007 maps and 2006 key, which means that the maps remain locked.

Nokia's cock-up.

Where the branding does become an issue is with the fix, simfree handsets can be taken to your local service centre where the maps will be unlocked with a firmware upgrade.
If they are unsure of the problem, tell them to take a look at Service Bulletin SB RM-122013.pdf.
Because this new firmware has not been approved yet by Vodafone they are unable to do the same for Vodafone handsets, you need to contact vodafone who will replace you handset via a doorstep swop free of charge.

Ah, I'll amend the news post then! (though it won't show up in the forum version)

Oh and anyone thinking of changing there product code to generic and upgrading the firmware via NSU, don't bother it doesn't work.

I certainly didn't have any problems with a retail sim-free 6110 bought in mid-2007, which is the one we used for AAS's review.

I spoke to vodafone today and they say they know nothing of this problem. No surprise there! So it looks like I'll have to wait for them to approve the firmware upgrade.

Hi,

We are very much aware of the problem; sorry for the misinformation over the phone. As soon as we know what Nokia are planning on doing with the handsets we'll be able to get this frustrating problem sorted out for you.

Kind regards,

edwardpeter
