1) You can change a vodafone/orange branded phone to a non branded version of firmware. Change as per the instructions above at the top, and then when NSU says there is no firmware update available take the option of 'reinstalling' the firmware and you will get your debranded firmware.

2) This does NOT take away the SIM lock though - the SIM lock is a seperate lock and nothing to do with the firmware - you will still only be able to use a vodafone SIM for example.

3) When restoring a backup where you have changed your product code, never EVER under any circumstances restore the 'settings' part of the backup. This is what causes the phone to get screwed up and you have to use the hard reset trick.

(for example most vodafone firmware disables the VOIP phone sections of the firmware [and appropriate settings], and so cannot be restored onto a non branded firmware phone as the settings dont match up)

you can restore contacts, notes and calendar just fine though.

Hope this helps.
Hi Nyxmorph

Thank you for your reply.
I have a black Nokia E51 from Vodafone (delivered a week or so ago) which has no branding on it and is not SIM locked (well I can install O2, Orange and T-Mobile SIMS as I have tested it) but some things such as the access points in connections cannot be deleted for some reason.
I changed the product code with success to the EURO 1, 2 and 3 Black product codes above and then tried an NSU update. I tried uninstalling the NSU software I had on my computer and downloaded the latest version from Nokia.co.uk for the E51 and the problem still persisted!
The problem I refer to is that the NSU program detects the phone with the changed product code but says the software I have is the latest version and then doesnt give the option to update it or reinstall it using the same version already on it. The option to reinstall the same software (if there is no later version available) does appear via NSU as soon as I change the product code back to the Vodafone original one.

Hope that makes sense and you can provide some help.

Best wishes

KVU

ooOooo now thats a new one. Hmmm maybe you will have to wait for the first update of the firmware then unfortunately to switch firmware.

Strikes me as quite strange though. Maybe they are getting smarter with the NSU at some point.

Hello

Just received a E51 crippled with Orange France firmware, I have problems changing the product code with NSS.

I'm using :
Nokia PC Suite 6.85.14.1
Nokia Software Updater 1.4.36fr (tried with 1.4.36en first)
Nemesis Service Suite Beta 1.0.38.12 (also tried with 1.0.38.10)
USB cable DKE-2 coming with the phone, seems to be a standard USB cable
E51 with product code 0561450 and firmware 100.34.20

When I try to use NSS :

1) after doing a "scan for new device", last line of text I have :
->Products Dir('products').......Not Found.

Using FileMon I see that it's looking for a "C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\products" directory. No one here was speaking about Phoenix, so I assume it has nothing to do with the problem.

2) I click on "Phone Info" then "Scan" the status bar says "Scan for product..." then after 2-3 seconds "Scan for product... Error!".
Same thing if i click "Read" "Reading values..." and after 2-3 seconds "Reading values... Error!".
If check "Enable" type a Product Code and then "Write" it ends up with "Write new values... Error!".
If I use NSS 1.0.38.10 that's it, when I use NSS 1.0.38.12 when I click a second time on "Scan" or "Read" the message remains "Scan for product" forever and when exit NSS I have an error message saying something like "memory address 0xXXXXXXXX can't be read"

I tried with 3 PC, same problem on all of them. 2 WinXP Pro SP2 one with and one without Nokia PC Suite installed, and 1 WinXP Home SP2 with no Nokia PC Suite.

Someone has an idea?

Hi guys! First of all thank you! Great work!

Personal thanks to ziffos and Nyxmorph!

I had an EUR1 0555751 CTR MEA BLACK - e51

and I used the BULGARIAN language pack, followed the instructions of ziffos and took a note on Nyxmorph's comment about the restoring the backup part and everything works just fine by me!

So once again, thank you very much!

WELL,

After reading a few threads along the lines of this one ... http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum...ad.php?t=71811

... I hear that the lastest Nokia Software Suite stops other programs accessing the phone delibrately, nasty Nokia - this may explain Initiators post above. You may have to remove more than just uninstalling it possibly? On the system without Nokia Software Suite, was it uninstalled or was it never installed on those systems. Hmmmm.

My problem is solved. I used another PC that never had any Nokia software installed, installed JAF that has cable drivers coming with the install, and used NSS with no problem.
Someone gave me a link for an old Nokia cable driver later, I haven't tried it.

PC Suite and NSU might be unhappy without the new cable driver, so I just let them as they were.

I've seen on another forum that if you update PC Suite and NSU with a phone plugged you can choose not to update the cable driver.
