Tom Tom/E90

Hi, could you tell me the best way to install Tom Tom on my E90? prior to the e90 I had been using the tom tom nav 5 on a Palm treo 650. I like the idea of the integrated GPS and would like the option of using tom tom maps etc.
Thanks

Unfortunately, current Tom Tom versions won't use the internal GPS on any symbian machine (AFAIK - certainly not on my E90), and they don't seem to be all that bothered on releasing updated software for smartphones of any sort. It also won't support the internal screen.

Having said that, it works fine (although not officially supported) on the external screen. I installed it by copying the files on my installation Mini SD to my Micro SD.

Hi Julie

Sorry you are wrong with the latest Firmware V07.40.1.2 it works perfectly on the internal screen just not if you start it on the external screen and try to switch is what i have found. If you start Tom Tom on the internal screen it works perfectly of course with an external GPS receiver.

That's interesting. My E90's a Vodafone one, so haven't been able to update the firmware yet without invalidating my warranty (haven't checked for a week or two, so that may be available now for all I know).
I haven't been able to get further than the TomTom logo on the internal screen. Surprising (but good) that the firmware makes a difference.

Hi Julie

Unless you have a really compelling reason to keep the Voda branding personally i would advise getting rid of it and changing it to a generic version. As although the Voda Branding looks quite minimal it actually makes quite a lot of difference IMO. It certainly did on my N95 8GB and my E90 although originally 02 is also debranded now running the latest generic firmware. I only get a branded handset for the subsidy and if i know i can debrand it, of course this is just MO and what i do. Also as far as i am aware while it may invalidate your Voda warranty it doesn't your Nokia warranty as after all you are still running Nokia official approved firmware so if you have a problem whilst Voda may not help a Nokia Service Centre should well that's what I've been led to believe.

I have no reason at all to want the Vodafone branding, but I'd want to be VERY sure I won't invalidate 11 months of warranty before I hack it.

Hi Juie,

Well all i can suggest is phone an Nokia Service centre and ask if flashing a Nokia handset with non branded firmware invalidates the Nokia Warranty which by the way should be two years warranty not one year.

It's indeed a pitty that TomTom doesn't work with the built in GPS, but I still have a BT gps unit from my previous phones.
Or when you check it on ebay, you have a good one for a cheap price

about the internal screen, it works great indeed. The only fact is that you have to open it on the internal screen and use it there until you exit the app, same goes for the external screen.
Because when you switch to the other screen, it is still in the memory but cannot be opened anymore so you have to kill the app and retry.

I really hope they will release a TomTom version with dual screen support and internal GPS support!
Because that Nokia Maps or Google Maps etc are always via 3G and that is a bit to expensive in my country (Belgium)

Nokia maps are not 3G if you download the maps via your PC. You can download the maps you need via wireless/broadband and load them.

You do have to pay subscription however for getting turn by turn voice guidance.
