The N73 gets a speed bump

We seem to have missed that the big-selling Nokia N73 ME got a new firmware upgrade a few days ago. The new version is 4.0750.31.2.1 and reportedly makes the device a lot snappier. Hmm... I don't think Demand Paging is implemented here, but comments welcome from N73 owners - anyone care to back up, update via NSU and restore in the interests of experimentation?

Read on in the full article.

Uh, demand paging would be a killer feature!
I also hope that the good old N80 will also have a firmware update to enjoy higher speed.

Oh yes! I've been looking for the change log for a week now.. Someone please do it.
Also, apparently the firmware hasnt been released everywhere. Currently, its only released in APAC regions (asia) which i've noticed doesnt include India.

Lightbulb N73ME new firmware

I decided to upgrade my normal N73 with firmware V 4.0735.3.0.2,
to N73ME V 4.0735.3.0.2 as the upgrade was not yet available to normal N73.
Personally I don't recommend you to do this but to me everything worked without a problem.
I used "Nemesis Service Suite" to change my phone's product code
from scandinavia to euro music edition and then simply used
Nokia Software Updater to update the firmware.
Off course I backed up all the data I had on the device and then restored it.
The phone seams to be the same and the most noticeable difference is that
now the multimedia key is replaced by music key which takes to directly to the player.
I don't know if I can post any links here how to do what I did but I'm happy to answer
any questions. Just be sure that by doing this you loose the warranty of the phone.
To me the phone doesn't really seam much faster than it was.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the last minute "issues" (ie problems) Nokia have been having with the Next Gen N-Gage platform.

Perhaps this firmware update is intended to help fix the platform's problems?

Thumbs up

Hey Steve! I've updated to the latest firmware recently and have definitely noted the much, much-improved memory-handling capabilities -- infact, I was pleasantly surprised to see Demand Paging being mentioned over at Symbian Freak.

I've listed many of the changes/improvements over at my blog...here's a quick run-down for everyone -- apart from a greater amount of free RAM available for apps, loading times for various elements, such as the Menu, Contacts or even when opening random Folders have dramatically improved. As a result, Menu navigation -- which was previously unbearable and horribly lethargic, is now a breeze!

According to some other people who have upgraded, Camera performance under night-mode has improved too and the blue-haze issue is less of a problem now. I haven't confirmed this yet though.

Krisse's theory seems quite plausible. With the previous firmware, v4.0736.3.2.1, with typical use the amount of free RAM available for apps used to hover around 10-11MB. Remarkably, that figure has shot upto 12.5-13MB with the upgrade. So, they really have done wonders with the new firmware.

"So, they really have done wonders with the new firmware"

Oh come on you mean they've finally got the code right, it only like took them YEARS!

Still I don't want to sound negative. The Symbian S60 platform is getting better and better and it's great to see all these phones getting updates that address the issues people have been having. I wish they'd do an E60 update too, it's not been updated for ages.

Angry Why leave early adopters in dark

If N93 gets demand paging and/or better code, why leave E60, E61 & E70 owners high & dry.
We suffer from the same issues...lack of RAM, slowish interface even slower JVM.

What about an update for the N93? Nokia seem to have forgotten this model and it's users.
