Guys and gals, I’ve just finished my multimedia playback battery life tests.
Exactly the same tests, conducted under exactly the same circumstances (static and same placement, disabled 3G, no Net connections / programs running in the background, no Bluetooth, lowest backlight; no incoming / outgoing phone (call, SMS etc.) activity; factory earbuds with 70% volume level and exactly the same set of WMA’s, in the same order) that yielded in 5:26 total playback time (from being topped up battery to the handset entirely shutting down) with the v12 ROM, now, resulted in 7:55 total playback time with the new, v20 ROM.
That is, the low-CPU multimedia playback battery life has been increased by 45% !!!! This means it’s true what the Nokia folks have claimed: that is, they have implemented far better scaling (underclocking) than in previous firmware versions.
I’ll repeat the tests with A2DP to see whether the improvements are similar, or, does A2DP result in a significantly less battery life gain.
(For my v12 results, see http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1273334 ; you might want to read others’ results at http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1282983 too)
EDIT (11/29/2007 4:53 AM CET): as promised, I've made some serious A2DP battery life tests with the new firmware version (as has been done previously with the old one).
Unfortunately, with A2DP enabled, there is not any battery life increase when playing back WMA files using the built-in Music Player. Playing back the same WMA files, the battery life has turned out to be exactly the same (5:02) as with the previous tests. This means that, while previously the difference between the wired and the wireless case wasn't very big (about 9%), now, it's 57%.
This may be caused by A2DP's switching the CPU into the same speed than previously, unlike with the simple wired playback, where the CPU may operate at a lower frequency (with the new fimrware version) than previously.
I'll try to make MP3 tests too as the built-in Music Player has significantly higher CPU usage with both playing back WMA (let alone thorugh A2DP). With MP3, the CPU usage is significantly lower (with A2DP enabled, still (!) lower than WMA without A2DP) - I'd like to see whether this does result in a significantly better battery life with the new firmware version.
EDIT (12/02/2007): some VERY thorough battery life tests have been published with the new, v20 firmware at http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum...d.php?p=350782 . Don't forget to check it out!

Missing Calendar from main screen
I'm missing the calendar from the tool bar on the main screen after the v20 update, it has been replaced by 'watch'. Does anybody know how to customize the main tool bar?

A new (big) problem?
I think I have found quite a serious problem with the new firmware (v20): when I plug Nokia's headset, the one that came with the phone (bough in Finland, Europe), the phone does not recognize it as a headset! It asks what sort of "enhancement" it is (what is already a bit annoying) and when I select a "headset" it works all right, at least I can hear music from the audio player. However, the buttons on the headset do not work with the player (i.e. volume control, pause/play, next/back)! If this is a general firmware issue, that's veeeery bad! Can somebody verify that on her/his phone? I mean, is it the firmware, settings backup/restore issue or perhaps my headset got broken accidentally at the same moment as I updated the firmware?...
Thanks in advance for help!

After upgrading to Version 2.blah
Option to "Create Muvee" has disappeared for me and also Voice Dialing gives an error "Voice System Error"
Can someone here confirm if i'm on my own with this one before I go through the firmware reload path.
Cheers.

Firmware upgrade failed
Hi Guys 'n' Gals,
An earlier post asking for help, mentioned that the upgrade failed, app. told them to remove battery/power, reboot phone and try again. I have the same problem, the upgrade all appeared to be going swimmingly, had downloaded the upgrade and was in the installation stage, then threw up the error message. Now left with a screen which is backlit and displays the Nokia logo. I have tried the various reset codes and 'turn off, press and hold 3 + * + green button, turn on procedure', all to no avail.
Having carried out previous upgrades on my own phones and those of friends, I was pretty confident that this would go without a hitch. I have even had this scenario before but using the reset methods recovered the situation successfully.
I have the latest Nokia upgrade software, have backed up everything, made a record of all settings, the phone is debranded and qualified for the v20 upgrade, was fully charged + on mains power. I have done everything right to my knowledge.
Apart from the light and logo the phone appears to be dead - even have to remove the battery top turn it off.
Is there anything else I can try ? or does it need to be returned to Nokia ?
I won't be the only one in this situation, so could somebody please give us some guidance - Thanx.

Firmware Upgrade a success after Nemesis update.
Hi all,
I posted on this forum about two days ago when the firmware was released. I wasn't able to upgrade my firmware because the phone was branded with T-Mobile. Someone suggested I follow the instructions on ' Nokia Debranding', which I did, and I am now running the latest firmware version and over the moon with joy. My Nokia N95 is so much better than it was, in every aspect.
I have read almost all of the above posts, and some of the problems people are experiencing, I must say puzzle me, because I have not had a single problem with this firmware upgrade.
All my previous applications listed below have re-installed successfully and work. I also originally took a backup prior to running the upgrade, and then I restored after the upgrade. I have not noticed a loss of icons, nor has my T-Mobile default icons returned (Web n' Walk). All the extra icons are there.
Here is a breakdown of what I did and the apps I had and are still installed.
- Ran a backup of my current version 12.0.013
- Updated Nokia Software Updater to the latest version.
- Ran Nemesis and changed the product code to the code mentioned on the
- Nokia Debranding Guide.
- Ran another backup because I am paranoid.
- Ran Noka Software Updater and it upgraded the firmware to v20.0.015.
- Re-installed all my sofware as per the list below.
Everything I had loaded previously re-installed successfully.
- Calendar
- Clock
- Mobi Reader
- Messenger
- SMS Export
- Advanced Call Manager
- Moving Ball
- CorePlayer
- Social FM
- Google Maps
- Screenshot
- DivX Player
- Calcium
- Rolling Ball
- Light Sabre (latest)
- RotateMe
- PhoneGuard 2.0
The following application are running considerably faster than before: - Web Browsing doesn't crash anymore even with big sites such as FT.com and Yahoo.co.uk
- The camera is much faster starting up and taking a photo.
- Browsing photos and images is really quick
- Can now have multiple applications open at one time (Music, Gallery, RotateMe, Web).
I also registed for ' My Nokia' to receive the Tips and Tricks, and I just received my first text from My Nokia and it's something I didn't know
Tip: To turn off your phone sounds quickly, press & hold #. Do the same to switch it back to the general profile.
I tried out Fifa 07 in the N-Gage section. I am not sure the Nokia N95 is meant for these games. Don't get me wrong the game plays really well, but in landscape mode controlling the players is difficult with the keys on the right.
Overall I am one very happy customer and extremely pleased with the latest firmware. I can't wait for the next one though.

If not does anyone want to buy a N95?

Bluetooth devices work fine with the latest version of firmware. I have bluetooth headphones and for the past two days have used them for +- 3 hours at a time, and they have never dropped out or stopped working....

I can confirm this as it also happened on my N95-1 on Monday evening right after flashing the gadget from 12.x to 20.x.
You may want to have a look at this answer http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum...81&postcount=5 I wrote last night...
(took the headset to the shops to see if it's the headset or a faulty flash on my N95...)

Must be a backup/restore issue - the factory remote is working great on my N95.

Ref post #141
Any ideas guys ?????????????
Come on ! even if you just confirm that it's gotta go back to Nokia.
I ain't the only one experiencing this problem ... and yes, I've performed numerous upgrades before, only this time it went belly-up ... could happen to you next time !
Solving it will probably elevate you to God status .... but then again it's easier to blah blah blah about wot got fixed & wot didn't.
Geeeze ! Give a little will ya !

Sounds like you need to get it to a service center. If it dies on an upgrade and won't start again, there is probably nothing to do - except changing the system board.
It happened to me with an N70 - the phone died during upgrade performed at a service center (!) and they had to send it back. Took about a month to get a replacement :-)
At work, we recently upgraded 26 Windows Mobile based terminals. 5 of those died during the upgrade. All were full battery and connected to charger.
There is definately room for improvement - like a non-eraseable boot loader that can pull a new firmware over USB, if the first attempt fails..
Regards
Michael
