The E51 on video, plus 'Do you need qwerty?'
Smartphones Show 47 just went live, with my video review of the impressive Nokia E51, a feature on text input and qwerty on a phone, plus upgrading the Palm Treo 750 to WinMob 6. Also note the (H.264) MP4 video version.
Read on in the full article.

I can't believe I'm agreeing with the Americans - but yes, I don't believe any phone can be truly smart without QWERTY (or touchscreen character recognition). Why isn't there an E70i ?

I think I am with the Reuters guys regarding the qwerty debate. N95 with stowaway bt keyboard beats qwerty-on-device and not so hot camera/video performance (so you need to carry extra gear around anyway) for me too.

I code Python on an N95 using the inbuilt keyboard. Not as the main dev platform obviously, but I am often on the move and do a lot text input that consists of Python code words that you can't T9.
It's not the best but I can comfortably do 100 lines or so on a flight.

Any idea when we will see a qwerty FP1 device, other than the overpriced E90? Soon as the e61i or E70 refresh I'll upgrade. I thought about getting the E51 from buy.com for 300 USD but then I'll need to spend another 100USD, if I'm lucky, on the SU8W. How about paring the N810 keyboard to S60? That would be fantastic.

I still stand by T9. It is by far the fastest method available for a mobile device and the most convenient since it can be done easily with one hand. I've tested myself and I average about 55 WPM normally and I can reach up to 65 WMP comfortably.

Just got round to watching this. I've always sworn by qwerty, even in the late 90s when my friends were getting Windows CE/Palm devices, the tablet form factor is shite for data entry. Yet QWERTY seemed something that all PDA makers wanted to move away from which lead me to my 9210. I don't know how unusual I am, and though still getting to grips with my E90, on my 9500 I'd be writing I'd guess an average of 500 words a day with peaks around 3k-4k words quite comfortably. And that just ain't gonna happen without QWERTY.
