GMail gains IMAP
Although not a specific Symbian OS item, many people use GMail. And they just added IMAP support, giving you another way to access your GMail on your smartphone with even more options. Just enable it in (On the GMail site) 'Settings|Forwarding and POP/IMAP'.
Read on in the full article.

REALLY COOL! Thanks for posting this! I just configured GMail on my P990i two weeks ago and couldn't yet get IMAP working but I would much prefer to use IMAP rather than POP.
Gonna try it out right now :-)

Is this region specific? I am not getting a "IMAP" option in the forwarding and pop menu. Just "POP".

Does GMail support Imap-idle? That would be useful!

I don't know about IMAP idle or being region-specific, but it works like a treat with my GMail account and my UIQ3 phone...
Regarding regions, I'm dutch but my account is at 'gmail.com'; I don't know if it works the same if your account is at 'googlemail.com' or at something else?
Cheers,

It will take a few days before all GMail accounts have IMAP-option available. Meanwhile it would really be interesting to hear whether there is IMAP IDLE available or not. Anyone?

Yes, it does appear to support IMAP IDLE. If you enable "Auto Retrieval" in the Nokia mail settings to any refresh time, when you exit the mail box, the mail box connects and stays connected (so 3G always on). Then as soon as an e-mail arrives (no matter what you have set the refresh time to) the mail arrives in the phone mail box - very nice!
One thing - I do not see any mention of IMAP in my GMail Settings page. I was previously using POP, so that is enabled. Even though there were no IMAP settings, I decided to try it anyway and it worked. So guess the only way you will know if it will work with you is if you try it out...

Apparently you may need to log out of GMail and log back in again in order to see the IMAP option etc.
Good luck!

Google's GMail Blog says:
<quote>
If you don't see the "IMAP" in the "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" tab, then check back soon. We are giving it to users as fast as we can.

So as far as I can tell, this solves the "old mail disappears" issue (the one fixed with "recent:". It even fixes the thing where emails you send appear in the inbox as unread! YAAAAAAAAAAY!
Edit:
Ohhhh and I can subscribe to individual labels from a list. And folders too! As in, in mailbox options, retrieval settings, folder subscriptions I choose which labels and (inside "[Gmail]") which preset folders I want to subscribe to, and from now on I have a list of folders in the Gmail mailbox on my device which I can browse through and move messages from place to place in. Coooool.
Edit2 (and last):
Apparently you can't move messages from place to place within the folder system in symbian imap. Seems to be a symbian limitation though... not gmail's fault.

Is anyone able to compare which is less battery hungry, imap idle or mailforexchange?

This is the best news in AGES!
By the way, often new Gmail features are given to US users before they are rolled out for UK users. No need to wait though: just change your 'Language' option (in Gmail settings) from "English (UK)" to "English (US)" in the meantime.

Not working on the m600i
I tried as soon as I heard the news, however, after everything is set up, the Messaging program comes back saying 'Server returned error: Check username and password' or something to that effect. I know the username and passwords are right. Any suggestions?! Gmail's own help page say they prefer mobile users to check mail using their Java app.

This is probably an obvious thing to check but when you entered your username, did you enter your complete email address? In other words, did you include the 'at gmail dot com? I overlooked that when I first did this.
