Gmail Mobile major update - hits v1.5

There's a big new version for Gmail's Java application for mobile phones, released quietly yesterday. If you click on a contact in Gmail Mobile 1.5, you'll see full details, including their photo, and if you entered the phone number in your contact's details, you can call them directly from Gmail Mobile. More improvements listed below.Another improvement is that you can save an unfinished message for sending it later. And, like the Maps Mobile application, Gmail shows the bandwidth usage every time it loads data. Plus there's an option for encrypting your traffic, but this is not recommended because it slows down the application. It's early days for Google Mail Mobile 1.5 and note that so far it's available only in English. To install it, visit gmail.com/app from your smartphone.

Read on in the full article.

Would be great if they can come up with a Symbian version.

Yes, a S60 app would be great, they did just make a maps native version. Download it quickly with this link. I don't have enough posts to make this a link but I am sure a moderator can. img src="http mobilecodes.nokia.com/dm?BARCODE=http%3A%2F%2Fgmail.com%2Fapp&X=0.18&nam e=&type=link&MODE=TEXT&a=view" alt="" /

For me the data counter is totally broken, it keep saying 1 or 0kb and when I go see in the log, the transmission was of 4-5kb.

Thats odd... I've had 1.5 for a month now. I installed it once I got the N95-3. Wasn't aware of the new features though.

Is there a way to stop this asking if it's okay to connect every time I run it. ..and then asking which connection to use? I'd love to just launch the app and have it connect over GPRS without any more clicks. :|

(If anyone is annoyed by the "Sent from Google mail for mobile" at the end of their e-mails, they can turn that option off in the Settings screen.)

Problem installing on Nokia E61

I've tried installing the update says v1.50 on web page (but says v1.05 on application details screen when installing) but the error message 'invalid Jar file' screen pops up.

mwgpollard, you aren't alone. Version 1.5.0 seems to be messed up and is incompatible with several (Windows Mobile) KVM's I've thrown it at - as opposed to 1.1.1. The case might be the same with yours.

(BTW, Solnyshok, nice to see you here Excellent article you've written, I'll link it in from my forthcoming MIDlet Bible.)

In Tools > App Manager, find the program and Options > Open. You can choose the access point and set Network access to 'Ask first time'. That won't kill all the prompts as S60 does like to ask you whether you want to connect, but it will reduce them anyway.
