I just brought an N95, what do I need to know?

I just brought one brand new, what do I need to know about this phone that the guys in the shop won't tell me? Apart from poor battery life is there any other problems? I would really appreciate it if someone who can teach me about the symbian software adds me on msn messenger themoose at gmail.com

The main thing I want to do is get a decent australian sat nav running on the phone. How do I go about this in the best/without being too expensive manner?

What other cool things can I do with my phone in regards to software and stuff?

How long have you got?

The obvious voice calls, texting, and camera for pictures and DVD quality video, with playback of pictures and video through the TV. Ability to take a picture and instantly send it to the website or another phone or any email destination. Photo album software manages all pictures.
5 day and instant weather forecasts for any location globally
email - send and receive, including attachments, and full web browser
Open and edit Office documents (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) as well as read Adobe pdf files, and the ability to handle zip files
Calculator, alarm clock, currency convertor and voice recorder
Music (mp3 player) - currently have 24 albums loaded on mine and can plug in standard headphones for listening to music on the go, or plug it into my car, or other external amp.
Full calendar and task manager, with ability to synchronise with web access, so others can view and add to my calendar at any time. No more "I didn't know you weren't free that day" conversations
GPS route navigation software with full global road mapping and full UK Ordinance Survey maps for walking/cycling
Electronic book reader - novels etc, plus daily newspapers
Encrypted vault for account details, passwords, credit card pin numbers etc
Full bank account / cheque reconciliation tracker - enter expenses as they happen to get instant picture of finances, with ability to export to MS Money or Quicken (or equivalent)
Yahoo (or any other) Instant Messenger
Capability to synchronise with computer via cable or wireless - added benefit is wireless access to internet wherever there is a wireless
hotspot, and also my wireless home network. Can listen to music that is on my computer on my phone.

Is that good enough?

Beer Upgrade it first

grab the latest firmware - its unlikely your handset came with the 12.0.0.13 firmware ..
Thats the first thing I'd do with a new one .. once you have that installed. you're set to add a few neat things like themes and tweak settings like wifi power etc ..

so do a search on this forum for firmware upgrade .. or look at this .. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uN9eRlddfH0 .. you might not require a code change if you have a standard unbranded handset .. but thats what you need.

Good luck! oh and welcome to the club!

Handy Safe from epocware. As well as the N95 software, it also comes with a desktop client that enables easy editing of categories and data, as well as sync'ing with the N95.

First of all, you need to know how to spell
its "bought"

I use apps like
LCG Jukebox, its better than nokia music player and allows you to stream internet radio from your wifi

Get Dix player to from mobile.divx.com
it will allow you to play movies

PanoMan is good, it allows you to take panoramic photos

also get clock screen saver, the standard one is too small.

enjoy, and keep it charging whenever you can

So do you. It's "it's" in both instances.

The phone commonly suffers from a loose slider, an easy fix if you are prepared to take a few screws out and take it apart.

Dont assign custom images to the multimedia menu screen that are located on the memory card, you will loose multimedia menu functionality (it will vanish) and only a hard reset/format will bring it back.

Turn of 3g if you dont use it, turn off wifi scanning, this helps save the battery juice.

Dont charge the phone for 16 hours initially this only helps damage the battery, when its charged, unplug it. also never let the battery run completely flat.

these are just a few things ive noticed in my couple of weeks of ownership

The manual isn't going to tell me about 3rd party programs that are handy to have. I have used this site for only a day and I have already noticed there is so many wankers on here. Alot of good people that are great help but so many wankers to sift through.

I partly agree - but the manual won't tell him about power saving tips, etc. AAS and other forums are the best place for that.

1. Tools > Settings > Phone > Network >Network Mode : GSM (not Dual)
2. Not sure about clock screen saver but jukebox from www.lonelycatgames.com
3. Handy Weather (www.epocware.com) but you have to buy it. Read the review Steve did on this site a few days ago, where a lot of free ones were mentioned.
4. www.epocware.com for the Vault but again you have to buy it. Banking software from www.freepoc.org (this is free!!)
5. Way too complicated to answer quickly here. Read the other threads on this subject. Sorry. I've a day job where I'm supposed to work )
