Firmware R6E28 for the P990 - We have a winner!

Asri al-Baker upgraded to the brand new P990 firmware from Sony Ericsson just over two weeks ago. Despite very heavy stress testing, he reports that R6E28 is a winner, that RAM use is much improved, the bugs are fixed and the camera is better. Can the Swedes finally draw a line under the troubled P990?

Read on in the full article.

For me it was too little too late. I bit the bullet, swallowed my pride (Yes, I was also sick as a parrot ) and bought a P1i.

Now that gives real multi-tasking. A quick look shows a dozen programs running including Messaging, DreamConnect, Handy Weather and Opera and I still have 57.9Mb to play with.

The joy, the speed, the small physical size - what a brick the P990 was - I'm over the moon

Too late for me

The latest (even the previous) update is still not available for all models (those with azerty keyboards for example).

Anyhow too late for me.
My new one will be a Nokia, since my opinion is that the P990i shouldn't have been shipped so early with all those bugs and flaws.

Talking

Hello
Many thanks for this great and positive test! It is amazing to see, that there is such a big improvement between R6D25 and R6E28 ! The other surprize was the short release of R6E28 after the previous version. SE is always good for a surprize.

How about the camera application. Is it closing down after a certain while ?
I am asking, because with the R6D25 if I forget to close the camera application, battery will be empty soon.

I am a happy and heavy user of the P990.

P1i cure for my S60v3 blues

I'm very happy with my P1i, it's slim, well-built and is amazing at multitasking, things that the N95 are not. Spread the word. There's more to life than S60v3.

LOL de_construct, too bad that the P1 is an obsolete 2006 technology p.o.s. compared to the N95, no HSDPA, no quadband, no EDGE, no 30fps video recording, no 16M color screen, no profiles, no call recording, etc. etc. etc.

Thanks, Guess Who, for enlightening (or rather 'endarkening') us that all these technologies appeared post-2006.....

Slightly at a tangent but I've always thought Call Recording to be rather immoral - if not illegal. A personal opinion but I wouldn't want people I called recording my conversation. It's bad enough withh CCTVs recording my every move when I leave home

Wow how truly amazeing one Year after launch and the P990 finally reaches the state it should of shipped in the first place. But then only when user out cry forced SE to have to release a final Firmware after they were happy to of left it as it was. SE realty showed just how much they value there loyal supporters with that attempted move.

martinharnevie: some of these technologies became standard in the high-end smartphone category in 2007. The fact that SE can't put quadband and EDGE or profiles into their "business" phones is even funnier.

Jejoma: that's why the beeping in every 5 secs so the caller is informed. It' s not for spying, it's very useful to record phone numbers or appointment info from conversations instead of trying to type in or write to paper.
