Too much plastic? The Nokia E61i takes on the Treo 750 and HTC S620

Steve Jobs slammed qwerty smartphones as having 'too much plastic'. While Steve agrees he's got a point, there are plenty of times when a real qwerty keyboard comes in darned useful. Here Steve reviews the Nokia E61i, the Palm Treo 750 and the HTC S620 in another AllAboutSymbian head-to-head. Of the three keyboarded units, which comes out on top?

Read on in the full article.

Great review Steve but I noticed you did not point out that while both the Palm and HTC smartphones use Windows Mobile 5, the Palm use the PocketPC version (meaning is uses a touchscreen) while HTC runs WM5 but the Smartphone version (meaning no touchscreen),but the big point here is the much wider choice of 3rd party apps available for the PocketPC version than Smartphone version even though the Treo has a wierd 240x240 screen.

Err... from the Treo portion of my text: "Although the presence of a touch-screen and stylus " - I know I didn't go over the exact differences between the different WinMob versions, but then this is a Symbian site and, in all probability, very few people are interested! 8-)

Nokia 61i - Where's SlingPlayer and Skype?

Too bad SlingPlayer or Skype are not supported on the Nokia E61i yet? Both are availble on the HTS620C/Dash at this time. FLG>>>

Nokia E61i vs HTC S620 - Fring and TruPhone

Yes, Fring is a excellent product! Also, the HTC S620 does not have TruPhone which is an equally superb product for the Nokia E and other series.

E61i

My E61i is great device, I prefer it over my E90. In communicator class you should have laptop like experience and it cannot happen when software platform is copied from candy bar phone's. Therefore I do prefer E61i over E90 in my current business use.

Nokia: I wish E90 with Maemo...

Re Steve Jobs' comments about "all that plastic". Does he really want a computer that doesn't have a keyboard?

Touchscreens are wonderful when you're clicking on links or scrolling around a screen or playing certain kinds of games, but they're next to useless for text input, and the internet is a very text-oriented medium (even a simple Google search or URL entry involves text input).

That's no slight on the iPhone, when I used the near-identically touch-oriented Nokia N800 it was great for all the selection stuff but I desperately wanted a physical keyboard whenever it came to things like email or instant messages, or even just entering search terms and login names.

And you can bet that the P1i will be featured in all kinds of editorial and head-to-heads.... when it's actually finished! We can only review what people have actually made. I suspect the P1i is still 2 or 3 months away yet. Anyone know for sure?

Could be even more now as some of the team have to be reallocated back to P990/W950/M600 firmware.

From the 24th July onwards, the P1 will start to appear on shops...

http://www.thinksmartshop.com/ThinkSmartShop.html - this is just an example...its a shop/partner of Planéte SE, that normaly does not fail in this kind of subjects

Also, latest info at esato from some guys with cellphone shops, points to end of July...

E61i is nice "one-hand" device but that's all it is.
