New version of Nokia Maps is out

This thread included a poll: Your verdict of the new version

New version 1.1 wk23 b04 is downloadable from www.smart2go.com (there's also a new version of Map Loader available).

What I've found out so far:
+ Better search functionality (I had some serious problems in the previous version to actually find some addresses at all).
+ Faster/better route planning.
+ Like the somewhat changed GUI as well.
+ Now actually "simulates" tracing on road for some period after loosing GPS signal when entering tunnels.
+ Quicker "calc. new route..." (?)
+ In main view one can at all time see how much data that has been downloaded.

- Longer time to get GPS lock (?)

Tip:
1. The "0" switched between 2D/3D in previous version. In this version "0" is mapped to "take me to GPS position" (top right key in prev. version).
2. Pressing any of 1-9 keys opens a "key word search field". Not sure though what you can search for here (whether it's Address, POI etc..).

They've removed the link/option for "N95"... :/ I downloaded it earlier (the N95 was an option...).

I the meantime it can be downloaded from here: www.uploading.com

I believe that's the same version I had on mine before upgrading (some what confusion version numbering.. v3.0 wk12..=> v1.1 wk...). Have made a note of it at work, I'll check on monday.

Also the smart2go site suggests that it's only a beta so be careful out there.

Secondly, despite the availability of the .sis I don't see anyway to download the MapLoader.

As far as I know S2g has always been beta until this point, even the one the n95 is shipped with is regarded a beta.

I look forward to it's proper release eventually.

Sorry for the double post (someone should merge these threads) but is it just me, or is there something I'm missing? Because as far as I can see the simple 'tracking' feature has been removed from this version.

There does seem to be navagation functionality, but no option to select 'tracking.'

There are certain instances when you are on the road (or perhaps traveling abroad on a train or whatever) when the ability to simply track one's position can be very useful.

Maybe I am just missing something - but if it has been removed, it seems like a very big step backwards

Technically its helping you navigate i guess they want you to pay for the navigation features.

Well that does suck. Does anyone have access to the older version that included tracking?

Thanks!

Yeah, I think I'm going back too.. perhaps it would have been worth waiting for an official Nokia udate to the maps application, because I think even the pricing is different with this version i.e. depending on what areas you want you have to pay more.. wheras on the previous version there was a single flat fee.

does it let you download only cities?

seki wrote:well heck anything would have been an improvement .. the server is still pretty damn slow though.:frown:

Well, I'm not sure (..haven't tried this myself but..) isn't it the same as planning a route (e.g. select From. 'GPS pos..' To: 'wherever you wanna go..' => Route calculates => Select "View on map" => Zoom in/out to preferred scale => Press "0" to get/have focus on GPS position => Drive... ?

As I said, haven't tried it, but doesn't it then keep focus on GPS position?

steffi wrote:Well consider yourself lucky at this http://mobile.textstream.fi link just isn't work for me at all re: accept and download.

Maybe you're the lucky one 😊
I've downloaded and installed both MapLoader and the new version for N95 but since Smart2Go.com and Nokia both has withdrawn the software from all sites there may be technical issues with thoose versions... :con?

We'll see in a few days, have patience.. 😎

Well, been out and tried it and there is no way in h*** that I can get the marker to follow the GPS position so I guess that the trace option has been removed.

My opinion however is that as long as the application, when running the navigation-feature, does the job well (good routing, fast re-routing, good options for selecting alternative route, fast GPS lock etc..) I'm willing to pay for the navigation service. My biggest "buts" with Nokia Maps (previous version) and the internal GPS so far has been;
1. Sometimes difficult to find the correct address (seems to work better in the new version).
2. Sometimes unable to calculate a route between to points (in general when not selecting addresses but simply to points on the map).
3. Sometimes takes ages to get GPS fix/lock.

Yet to early for me to say wether it does the job better now, time will tell...

Well this new version locked up my phone hard today when I went into preferences of the new Smart2Go application. Had to open the back and remove the battery to reset.

So how would you revert back to the old version then?

Installed update yesterday and tested a bit, and now phone discharging after 6-7 hours
without using it at all. can anybody confirm ? may be gps unit not turned off
or something like.. reboot doesnt help.

guess i am gonna to format it 😞

Since the N.Maps come with firmware I quess it would do the trick to simply uninstall/remove, and you should end up with the prev. version. Can't garantee anything though...
If all else fails a hard reset should do the trick.
