New Stacker is released (v.2.05)

Changes:

There is no need to unpack all applications to upgrade to the new version. Just install the new version
over the previous one.

So,

- We have highly optimized our format and found a way to improve compression rate a little bit. Now all compressed applications will take 276 bytes of space less each.

- Built-in FileBrowser is highly improved. It allows you to compress/decompress any file on your device in some key presses.

- Five compressor layouts were added.
+ Caption indicator - Small indicator displayed in the caption area.
+ Bottom indicator - Small indicator displayed in the bottom of the screen.
+ Classic progress - Classic progress bar on the bottom of the screen.
+ Caption pie - Small pie styled progress displayed in the caption area.
+ Bottom pie - Small pie styled progress displayed in the bottom of the screen

- Two performance options were added.
+ Best speed - compressor is optimized for high speed.
+ Background - compressor is optimized for multitasking, so while compressing/decompressing you can work with your device almost without noticeable performance lost and WITHOUT ANY LIMITATIONS.

- Look and feel settings were added in the 'Misc' menu.
Here you can define:
+ Which layout and performace will be used while compressed app is starting
+ Which layout and performace will be used while compressed app is clossed and being compressed

Default settings: when application is starting it uses high speed
settings and classic progress layout, when application is closing and
being compressed again it uses background settings for speed and small caption indicator.

Here you can also specify whether Stacker should change an application
icon or not. BTW, if you don't want Stacker to patch application icon
you can save additional 1-2 Kb per each application.

- English and German versions are available.

Full Stacker documentation can be found here:

yup, i have to say i love Hera as well!!! :turn-l:

i've always had favorite apps. first, it was seleQ, then it was sDoubler, and now its this little killer STACKER60!!! don't get me wrong, seleQ and sDoubler still kick ass, but the best buy for any 7650 user out there right now will have to be Stacker!

and, oh, btw, their people and customer service skills (symbianware, stacker developers) are simply unbeatable!!! 8)

cheers to all at SymbianWare!

It's good, but...

I like sDoubler still much better.

Why? Mainly because of the possibility to define groups. Try to compress ActiveDesk for example with Stacker and you will get only approx. 20k saved  . Why? It doesn't touch all the CIBM*.* file in the LIB directory, which waste most of the space! With sDoubler you save about 100k more!

I never regretted purchasing sDoubler and the current version, even the beta, is running perfectly stable now (they had some problems with their recent beta versions, which have been solved).

...Forgot to say: I am sure the next version of Stacker will offer this feature (Groups), too. Hmmm? Is there some competition out there???

In \system\Lib\ folder developers place common files, the files used by SOME applications not by one application only.

So, these dlls can be used not for ActiveDesk only, but for other Cibenix apps as well. And if so, you can get unpredictable behaviour of these apps. Moreover the application itself can have always in-memory module (that can work while the application is stopped and compressed) and this module can load these dlls, or - much more dangerous situation - this daemon can be started when the system is starting up and can require these dlls at this time (afaik Active Desk does have such daemon).

So I highly recommend you to avoid making such rules in 'Groups', if you are not 100% sure about what you are doing, and haven't been consulted with target application developer (e.g. Cibenix here)!

Of course! And some more improvements as well But it will look quite different (like extension for our built-in file browser) and called 'Favourites list' - frequently used files and whole folders list. You
will be able to compress/decompress everything you define in one key press. One favourite's item will include a group of files and/or folders.

We still avoid residing Stacker in system memory. Stacker automatically starts on demand only (while compressing/decompressing something), and unloads immediately when operation is completed.

Anyway if you have any ideas of how to make the program better we'll appreciate your suggestions (post them here or email to support@symbianware.com)

I have a suggestion! I would like to have the feature "recompress all". For example if you change the setting for patching the application icon, you have to uncompress all apps and then compress them again one by one. I would like a function that does this automatically.
