N95 as modem now only goes to lower speed

I connect my N95 via USB to my laptop, and use PC suite to connect it as a modem. When in a full 3G signal (dont know if it was only in full 3G it did this, as never used it away from full 3G) it used to connect at 400something kbps, but now only goes to 115kbps. These are the speeds that showed up on windows connection properties.

I used to get a 300 and something download result and a 100 something upload result if i ran a speed test (thinkbroadband.co.uk), but now i get a 54 download and 207 UPLOAD even though windows speed shows 115
Whats happenened?

Uninstall and reinstall your n95 modem. This will reset your windows settings. Go through your settings and set for max connection throughput. Then check your up and down speeds again. If still slow you lost your bandwidth. Remember that your settings in windows do not give the bandwidth they lets windows use it! Your bandwidth is set by your service provider and prevailing circumstances on the network.

Hi,

I think it's actually a fair bit simpler than that.

You can actually specify the speed that will show up in the properties up to a certain point. Whether that's the actual speed or not is something else.

Go to My Network Places > View Network Connections >
Double click on the "Nokia N95 USB Modem (OTA)" icon (or whatever the Nokia modem is called on your PC)>
Click the "Properties" button on the pop-up window >
In the next pop-up, you will see a list of modems, of which
"Nokia N95 Usb Modem (COM__)" will be ticked and highlighted
Under this scrollable list will be a "Configure..." button. Click on it >
Another pop-up will appear with a pull down menu that will allow you to select a Maximum speed (bps) ranging from 1200 to 921600 for that particular modem.
Make your selection then click all the open pop-ups away.

The next time you connect, the speed you will see displayed is the speed you have selected.

(You can select the speed using a different route - via the window that shows up while you're connected and you double click on the network icons on the bottom right bar of your screen, but you'll end up at the same controls. And you'll have to disconnect then connect again to enjoy the new speed).

It's the same procedure for all other modem connections, and I've always set it to max (921600 bps) for my 3G phones in the past. Now that I have 2 HSDPA phones, however, it's starting to irritate me that the max is obviously below what the phones are capable of and I'm wondering if Windows somehow needs some extra software to get over what seems to be a false ceiling. I'm saying this fully aware of the fact that the actual speeds won't generally get up to the 1.8/3.6mbps range... not for now, at least.

Hope this helps and doesn't somehow confuse you even more.

Thanks for the help, but keep in mind (on XP anyway, not sure bout others) you can just go to Start, Connect To, View network connections.
