Turning 3G off makes battery last a lot longer

My mate phoned me and said, as per the title, that if you turn 3G off then the phone lasts much longer - he's on the phone all day with his work and he claims it's made a big difference.

Obviously you'd neeb to turn it on again if you wanted to do some surfing but when the phone is just sitting idle it's probably worth a go if battery life is an issue for you.

i'll confirm that too, getting about 3-4 days with average use now 3G is off

It's pretty poor that you need to disable 3G on a 3G phone just to get decent battery life.

From my experience it will only have a significant effect if you have a lot of voice calls or are in a area where the 3G signal is week.

I don't have a lot of voice calls and haven't noticed much of a difference in std by time between GSM and 3G.

It's when you have a voice call where the 3G network more "effectively" drains the battery.

That does make sense. I don't make many calls and was wondering why it would make any difference. Perhaps it doesn't.

I have noticed my battery drains quickly overnight - I live in an area with v.poor 3G signal, while at work its full 3G (city centre) and lasts say 10 hours without dropping a bar...
