The times, they are a changin'

The last few weeks have seen rumours and reports aplenty (backed up by insider info) on the gradual transition of the UK and European networks to cheaper or flat rate ('unlimited') mobile data. This will all have a big impact on how people use smartphones. Watch this space.

Read on in the full article.

The operators all have plans in place for flat rate data, but are milking the cash cow of pay as you go internet for as long as they can get away with it...
Still, as everyone is suggesting I think movement is imminent. Suggest people don't lock themselves into long contracts at this stage given flat rate is likely weeks or months away, and will undoubtedly be tied to contracts themselves. Cheaper to switch to pay as you go for a little while if your contract needs renewing and then switch back later. Or just jump on Web'n'Walk or X-Series now if you prefer.

O2 Deutchland (German)

I use O2 in Germany and am happy to report:

In Febuary, I signed up with an E61 with a 30 meg data pack that cost 10 Euros per month. It wasn't the cheapest - but I hadn't found it to be a big issue as for casual tasks, I wasn't exceeding the useage..

Thanks to great sites like AAS, I rechecked the plans and found that they have changed in April to give 200 meg data for 10 Euros and 5000 meg for 25 Euros.

I called the Customer Service and they were very nice and converted me over to the 200meg for the same money! WOOHOO!

New Vodafone data prices:

Stupidly complex and still rather expensive, but better than the current option by some margin.
