Does nokia 3650 email client support smtp authentication?
Hi,
i followed the discussions on nokia 7650 and se p800 email clients and learned how important smtp authentication is als well as how much trouble is caused by nokias 7650 lack of supporting it.
so, ho does the 3650 perform? Does anybody know this already?
Thanks in advance,

Never used a 3650 but my guess is because both,7650 and 3650 use same Symbian version and Series 60 the 3650 should be very similar or
same as the one on the 7650.

Hi,
if the 3650 or any other symbian 60 does not support smtp auth. 'out of the box', will there be any possibility of a third-party-software email client to use?

Hi Euan,
it is correct that 3650 and 7650 do support pop3, smtp and imap (at least nokia's web side says so for the 3650).
BUT: This is just half of the truth. More and more email servers use SMTP protocol for sending an email AND they with need authentication.
(For clarification: authentication is not a mandatory part of the smtp protocol but many servers nowaday ask for it for security reasons. These servers can't be used without authentication)
Therefore it would be very convenient if 3650 had this feature.

i supposed we'd really need nokia to answer that one, unless someone now knows the answer?
it could depend on the server u are accessing

7650 new firmware 4.39 supports SMTP authentication.
So 3650 should also have it now or in the future with new fw version.
E-Mail
Authenticated SMTP connection is supported.
Support for older SMTP handshaking improved.

Yeah, i got 3650 and it does support those protocols, but How in god's butthole do you setup e-mail on the thing? Can you use your ISP e-mail servers and settings (one's that were given to you my internet ISP, not WAP/GPRS). For example, i use pipex, and i put theirs in - and er...GPRS seems to work...But connection to server times out...!? I think the same process is the same as 7650 so i might take a peep in the forum.

What SIM card do you have? I had a similar problem with my SE P800 and it was down to my Line/SIM not allowing it. I had o2 Online pas as you go and it wouldn't work even though i can browse the internet over gprs. I then tried my contract o2 and it work straight away.

SMTP authenticaion works
I was testing my phone's email client by making it connect to my own email server and checking the logs. And it looks like it uses smtp authenticaion as a default every time- if the mail server doesnt use smtp auth then it simply ignores it and carries on as normal.
