Want to switch, can S60 3rd ed. help with categories?

For 3 years I have been hoping to switch from Windows Mobile to a Series 60 phone. One of my requirements have been met: Candy bar with thumboard, i.e. the Nokia E61, but I have one further need and cannot find out the answer from Nokia's documentation, so perhaps someone can help.
I use categories in to-do lists a lot in Outlook and on my Windows Mobile 2005 device. I would have difficulty living with an organiser that can't handle categories (both viewing by category on the machine and syncing to Outlook). I have tried since the 7650 to move from MS, but no luck.
Perhaps this time S60 3rd edition has the functionality I need - does anyone know?

Thanks

Martin

No support for categories like in Outlook with S60 3rd Ed. and/or Nokia PC Suite.

If I understand the categories, they are not present is S60. Curiously, they are present with priorities in S40 - 6230 / 6230i, at least, have that! But they are not "Smartphones", arenīt they?

How sad

That is such a shame to hear. And people wonder why "Smartphones" haven't taken off. I'm not saying that everyone is checking to see if to-dos have categories, but it's stopping me buying one and spreading the word (I spread the word to 6 others concerning the Treo 600 and they all bought one).
It's funny how the Palm Pilot 1000 had full to-do support (priorities, categories, all fully synced) way back in 1996... as did the Psion Series 3 even earlier...
... Where did Symbian/Nokia go wrong?

Feature Packs can they help with todo categories

I'm still hoping to Switch from Windows Mobile to Series 60, and the thing still stopping me is the lack of category support in tasks (see my start of this thread).
I wondered if one of the new Feature Packs for Series 60 3rd Ed. solves this?
Hope someone can tell me the good news,
Thanks

Martin

I don't think anyone that actually uses a S60 phone for appointments use the built-in apps. I use Papyrus and it has categories for both regular appointments and tasks.

Thank you FRiC that sounds very promising. Just one question: Does Papyrus sync the task categories with Outlook or would I have to dual maintain them?
Thanks again,
Martin

Sorry, I don't use Outlook so I don't really know. I use the Google Apps variant of Google Calendar and haven't figured out how to sync to that yet. Try checking the developer's website, they have an active forum and feature requests are quickly handled.

Hi Martin,

No, Outlook doesn't sync categories with Papyrus. It's the Symbian os fault. I don't know if the 3rd edition supports the syncing of it (I thought not) but I did hear a rumor (from someone working for Dutch Nokia) that there will be support in the near future!
Only, how near is near......

I don't mean to hijack this thread; but in the same sense I also found a few other things annoying ... and shocking omissions in my opinion from Nokia:

1. No repeatable alarms; that's right! You can't set an alarm to repeat. Once it is triggered, it is removed and you must reset it. I read somewhere; I think on a preveiw of the E90; that in it one can set repeating alarms -- now I'm hoping that there is a 'workday' feature like in the excellent Handy Clock.

2. No SMTP authentication for default mail client. If your provider requires SMTP authentication, you cannot use the default mail client to send email. You can use it to only check email; you must use a third party program to send. This really is nonsense.

Sorry for the comments, but I was really annoyed that a company such as Nokia could release such a 'dumb' smart phone.

You can use Papyrus to create repeating appointments and have an alarm set for them so that the alarm will go off on a set interval.

We've just released a new version - 1.2.11 of Papyrus.
You can check it out here:
