Y-Browser is a file manager for 1st, 2nd and 3rd edition


Y-Browser is a file manager for Symbian OS (S60) devices. It doesn’t do as much as FExplorer yet, but it has most standard features that you'd use on files & folders.

Anyway, the most interesting part of this application is that it is fully compatible with all S60 3rd Edition phones and it has full access to all system resources on 3rd ed devices.

This means that it is able to browse system and private folders and somehow bypass whole new 3rd Edition (OS 9.1) Platform Security which is based on the ide.. ...

You're exaggerating and spreading misinformation, as you often seem to do, Apoc.

It has not "full system access", and it is not "bypassing" Platform Security at all, but relying on user grantable capabilities ("privileges") that any self-signed app can get/have (you see this if/when you install the app on an S60 3rd Ed. device).

That is true... is the first Free Explorer for S60 v3 - also Profiexplorer, but, not free.

Have you ever tried some of available file managers for 3rd edition, Sexplorer or ProfiExplorer, well if you didn’t try and you’ll that difference is more than obviously!!!!

N/A is absolutely right when he says this doesn't give full system access. It doesn't (because it can't) bypass PlatSec. You should also be aware that the data caged areas are not accessible even if they appear to be.

He's also right about the capabilities, this program (despite being a nice file browser / program) is not doing anything that cant be done via user accessible capabilities.

In the program the sys and private directories appear as empty (they're not, but you can't access them without the AllFiles capability). These folders are actually more important that anything else in internal working terms. The System folder is used by some third party program and that's about it.

You should also be aware that some directories can be written to temporairly but they will be cleaned on the next boot. This is the data caging as I understand it.

You may want to go and read the documents on Platfrom Security which explains this (I'm not an expert on the ins and outs) which are available on the Symbian and Symbian Signed website.

What this program does have is some extra function with regards to files such as being able to view its properties and change its attributes (this can be useful for hiding files for example). There's also some nice shortcut functionality.

Please but please read whole article !? I have to admit with you in almost all points and its already spotted din my article ?!???

Of course it hasn’t full sys access but you have to admit that it’s the first taste of it, for example it’s the only available 3rd party file manager that has access to ROM?!

Using SymSMB v.2.00 you can get access to C:\ D:\ from phone and
C:\ D:\ E:\ Z:\ from computer if you know "update trick" from v.1.10.
Needed comment - SymSMB appeared just recently and after many post in this tread have being posted.
