One million Nokia 3250s

Nokia has announced (in something approaching an advert, but still worth reporting for the sheer number involved) that the 3250 (the S60 3rd Edition smartphone with the 'twist' bottom) has sold over a million units in the last three months or so. Impressive, by any standards. Full press release follows...

Well, that's four times faster than the N-Gage ever managed, and of course the 3250 hardware is more powerful than the N-Gage.

Now if only they'd get their fingers out and start releasing games for S60 3rd edition, we might actually see some real hits.

I do not understand why! The price is almost the N70. In hardware terms this last one is well superior. Symbian 8, have lot of available software. In musical terms, they are equivalents. Reason to buy one 3250 if if can have a N70?

Well it makes you wonder what the other Symbian 9 devices doing. This 1 million figure is better than the 3230 did, but may not be as good as the N70 5 million figure.

Most 3250 purchasers probably don't even know the N70 exists. And even if they've heard of it, they'll have no idea that it can play music just as well. As can the 6630 and 6680 etc.

Sigh.

This probably depends on which part of the world you are, but where I live, the 3250 is way cheaper than the N70, but comes with better headphones, and includes a 512 MB memory card, which are important deciding factors for many consumers.

Not that N70 isn't selling well, and the just released N72 Kenzo is selling really really well, and it costs more than the N70.

My part of the world to buy is Internet! And is to escape you some thing, therefore n70 is the Nokia more sell phone in 1º half of this year, in the Europe and the asia. Already it sells about 5 million devices! See for your self the price of N70 in German Sites.

In Europe, maybe, but here in Asia, Nokia doesn't offer worldwide warranty, and Nokia phones only support one local language with no user downloadable language packs (unlike SE), so people tend to buy locally.

OK! I understand. In Europe they came with 6 languages. Is more easy to buy.

It's all to do with marketing, the 3250 is marketed as a music phone whereas the N70 is marketed as a smartphone, so people who want a music player think the 3250 is suitable but the N70 isn't.

They don't realise that inside there's not much difference between S60s, they're all basically the same kind of computer with various bits of kit glued onto the outside.

I could ask why people buy iPod Nanos when for the same price they could get a smartphone and a memory card with the same capacity. Again, the reason is marketing marketing marketing, the iPod Nano is a very fashionable item even if it's technologically very primitive.

In defence of the 3250, it does have some music-friendly features that the N70 doesn't, such as music controls on the twisty thing and a standard headphone jack so you don't have to carry an adaptor with you.

Completely in agreement. This thing of mp3 players, is for me a mystery. As it can somebody pay the same or until more, for a device that does not serve for nothing more, when it can have a small computer of hand, such as related, that it is a question of Bytes more or to less, that can make this, being a GPS, a radio FM, a remote command and everything more than if wanting. It must be Marketing, geek /gadget ignorance of the purchasers, lot of money... maybe.
