E61 Bug in software or hardware?
I recently purchased the E61 (4 days ago). I have my own imap mail server with idle support. I mention this because most people use push email from blackberry or other services. My problem is that when I set the indicator light to anything other than off, when an email comes in, the device will reset. The indicator light never turns on with the exception when I'm turning the device on. I have assumed that it was a software issue, but I haven't seen anyone comment on this exact problem. I'm beginning to think it is a hardware issue. I love the phone but these problem is annoying. I also experience reboots sometimes when checking emails (Not very often, maybe 5 times in 4 days).
Another problem is that I'm not presented with the option to download the body & attachments when setting up an imap account, I only see the option for headers.
What do you guys think, could it be a hardware issue? Or is it a bug that haven't been reported because most people don't use this tipe of "push" email?
BTW, I'm running
1.0610.04.04
19-04-06
RM-89
Is this the latest firmware?

Thats the latest firmware (I think). I would suspect your issues are software rather than hardware, but there's no guarantee of that.
I haven't tried IMAP stuff so can't comment specifically. Sorry! I would suspect there aren't that many people using this, though it seems kind of a big one to be missed.
Have you tried with a different type of email account to see if you get the same problems?

Using Fastmail with no problem
I use Fastmail which has IDLE. My email indicator light comes on without a problem.

I am having the same problem now... I can't even set it to any other than OFF.
But it was working in the past before I did hard-reset.

Imap
Hi,
I am using the same firmware as mentioned above, however with a German language interface so I am not sure if it matches the english terminology you are using.
I did set up several IMAP accounts, and all work perfectly well. Regarding the "Idle" issue I am not sure if I understand it correctly. I can choose the frequency of LED blinking for new e-mails (Off/2Min/30Min/2h), I usually choose 2 Min. The sync frequency available for e-mail is (5min/15Min/30Min/2h/4h/6h). IMAP always only syncs the headers (no choice offered). As soon as I want to open an E-Mail it retrieves the rest of the mail via WLAN or Internet (seemingly without the attachements, because if I select an attachement it is downloaded and opened in a second step (dont forget to save it on your mini SD).
I owned a Blackberry 7290 and I used a blackberry internet service configuration before. For me the E61 solution is close to Push Mail as 1) BIS only retrives in 15Min cycles, 2) like BB I only retrieve more content of a message when I am opening it, 3) I am free to choose (I am traveling a lot) if and when I want to retrieve my e-mails (e.g. via cheaper WLAN as data roaming is very expensive -with Push-Mail you have no choice here). And last but not least, 4) I do not have to pay a monthly fee for BIS, Exchange Server or whatever ...

Thanks for the replies,
The problem was actually hardware. I had to change to a different phone to make it work. Just in case, the problem was not that IDLE didn't work but that when the phone tried to use the LED to notify of an incoming email, it will reboot.

I wasn't aware the E61 supported IDLE - does this give you true push-email?

Does your E61 maintain the connection constantly, and receive emails immediately then, and if so, what settings are you using, because I thought there were problems with the IDLE implementation in the E61......I can't seem to get mine to keep receiving mail :(
Cheers

I only tried it briefly (with Fastmail.fm) - but yes, it does. Just using standard IMAP settings (I only set username, password, server and port).

I didn't set the port...it seemed to work without changing it. However, the device only receives emails for a while, then I have to reset the connection. Playing with the data call length settings, and the auto retrieval settings makes no difference whatsoever.
What did you set the port to?
Cheers

It is a known bug that the IMAP IDLE will stop working if you lose connection to the server. It nevers resets itself, it still thinks is connected. So, unless it is fixed on the latest firmware, we are out of luck
