Firmware Flashing to Remove Orange Homescreen - BANNED!

I've just been on the phone to a couple of Club Nokia service centres near me, and both have told me something extremely shocking indeed.

Nokia has told it's service centres that they are no longer allowed to firmware flash handsets to remove network-modified firmware, such as the woefully bad Orange Homescreen. Apparently, if a Nokia Service centre participates in the practace of Firmware flashing in this manner and gets found out, they will loose their service centre licence!

Personally I find this incredible, and possibly law breaking?

what is it that you want to remove? I have an orange n80, but no icons on the homescreen, only the network provider logo at the top. this can be done by going to tools-settings-phone-standby mode-and deselecting active standby.

Or is it that you want to be able to have the active standby but without the orange icons, like the photography option??

it does sound surprising that they would limit customers satisfaction of a product just to please a network provider. whats the point of a smart phone if its dumbed down

I'm not sure the Orange homescreen is woefully bad. I said this on another thread, but think it's relevant here, too:

You can choose what icons to have on the "active standby" / home screen by going to tools -> settings -> phone -> standby mode -> active standby apps.

I got my Orange N80 yesterday - there is no Orange homescreen, apparently they wanted to get the phone out as quickly as possible (after they screwed up the 6280's firmware) and so the N80 is factory standard for the time being. The active standby start screen is an S60 feature - not an Orange specific firmware modification.

Active standby is indeed an S60 feature, but as the Help for Menu/Tools/Settings/Phone/Standby says

"Some options may be switched off by your service provider"

THe option to turn off this awful Active Standby screen has indeed, been disabled by orange on my 6680, and i'm not happy about it
