A New Keypad

For what is not the first time, the BBC News Online website (updated every minute of every day - yeah right) has reported on a new text entry method for mobile phones - Fastcap.

As you can see in the photo, it certainly goes to town with the cramming of keys onto the keypad and, to be honest, I don't think it looks like it'll be up to much.

The magic of something like T9 is that you don't have to actually move your thumb that much so that words like 'high' are typed by pressing 4444. This fastcap business takes me back to the first ever electronic organiser I ever had, a Sharp IQ where the keyboard was arranged 'A B C D E' instead of 'Q W E R T Y' and it took me forever to type notes.

What do you guys think of this keypad and do you reckon it'll be better than predictive text? Of course, the best keyboard for typing like this is the 9210's! But what about the lesser devices?

Fer chrissake, what's wrong qwith qwerty? Stop trying to reinvent the wheel. People LIKE ABC layout, it's familiar and easily understandable. It also keeps SMS charges down. If you must type big mesages, choose a device with a decent keyboard.

Now, if Nokia were to put a Dvorak keyboard on the 9230...

For sheer speed of typing, I believe a Dvorak keyboard layout would be the most efficient. But they're not the easiest of things to use after typing on qwerty for 10 years!

Never used it,it is a keyboard layout, diferent then qwerty,an alternative that is claimed to be more efficient.

DVORAK wouldn't be much faster on such a small keyboard as it's advantage is in moving your fingers less. In the case of the 9210 you use both thumbs anyway (at least I do), so any gain would be negligable. That said DVORAK is great for security cos it'd take most muppets a month to figure it out.
