"My Own" folder problem (N70)

20 replies · 4,412 views · Started 15 April 2006

Have searched through the forum but couldnt find this mentioned anywhere, am i the only one who experiences this:

I've taken my memory card from my 6630 to my new n70 and noticed all the programs installed on the card were put in the "my own" folder. No real problems there, i could easily move them to where i wanted them but for some reason after a random length of time (we are talking a matter of hours here, not days or weeks!) the icons all move away from the folders i put them in and back into "my own". If i create new folders for the icons to go in the new folders stay there but become empty. All the programs still work fine but it is a bit of a pain havin to keep moving the icons back to where i want them. I know any phone is likely to come with one or two bugs but this one is taking things a bit too far - any suggestions as to what the problem could be ? do i need to reformat the card and install everything again now its being used in another phone or whats happened ?

try a soft reset (search forum for instrections on how to do this) take your memory card out befrore you do it though

Don't format your phone, its a memory card problem

Its not a Kingston Memory card is it ?

I had the same problem with a 512mb kingston card

I copied the contents of the kingston card to a PNY card, set my programs to where I wanted them and they have stayed ever since.

Too late now, have formatted the phone already, oooooops !

Must say that it seems to be ok for now but as the problem occurs almost completely randomly who knows if it'l happen again some time soon

it IS a kingston card :frown: but i never had problems with it in my 6630. Is it possibly a firmware fault rather then a faulty card ? Although i only got the phone on thursday its still running firmware 3 and i notice that version 5 is out so maybe i have to upgrade ?!

Much as I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you do a forum search for 'Kingston', you'll see that it's not a brand that works well with the N70 handset :frown:

had noticed this already :frown: quite surprised as i always thought kingston memory to be quite reliable. Am still holding onto the hope that its just a firmware issue but guess i may have to bite the bullet and shell out for a new card if things dont improve

Just when i thought i had it sorted its gone and moved everythin again :frown:

Guess i do need to change the memory card (unless anyone can confirm that a firmware upgrade solves the problem?!) so can anyone recommend a card that does work with the n70 ? at least 512mb is preferable

I've been using a 1GB card from Mobymemory since Dec 2005 and I've never had any problems. It's worked perfectly from day one (and if that's not tempting fate, I don't know waht is). Card was 50 odd quid when I got mine, they've now dropped as low as £25.99.

cheers - will look into getting one of them then. Guess i'l just have to ebay my old card or somethin now its been rendered useless 😡

oh well, will just have to kid myself that i "needed" a 1gb card anyway ! 30 well spent then

never had problems with kingston products before so still seems a little strange that their cards aren't fully supported - first time for everythin though, eh :frown:

I'm a but late now...but did you try copying all memory card contents to your PC, formatting the card with your phone, and then copy data back from your PC to the card?

Also, could have checked if any of the files aren't 'read-only'

Jon

any hints as to what files i'd be looking at as far as being "read only" goes ?
dont really fancy checking EVERY file on a 512mb card so any hints as to which files could be causing the problem would be appreciated.

Havent tried formatting the card yet - that was this afternoons task.

Does seem strange that the card works fine with the exception of this (extremely annoying) little bug

im not so sure that it is the menu since the way that apps are orgasnised is held on the c drive of the phone
take a look here

Just had a look and the applications.dat file is not read only so that doesnt seem to be whats causing the problem.

Formatted the card earlier and have re-installed a few apps, just have to wait and see what happens now. If the menu layout lasts til the end of the day, maybe im safe to keep using the card. Wish me luck ! lol

Just a quick update - the problem WAS the card 😡

within hours of my previous post all my icons moved back to "my own" folder. Ordered a mobymemory 1gb card and have been using it for 3 days now without any trouble. Those of you thinking of using kingston memory with your n70 - DONT DO IT !!!!

Thanks for all the help guys even if the solution wasnt the one i wanted to hear !

Glad to hear that you got it all sorted. I guess you could always ebay the old 512MB Kingston card.

Ouch! I've just ordered myself a 1GB Kingston for my own N70. I'm curious as to whether it's simply a faulty batch of cards or whether it's a design fault of some kind. But how could the physical card (assuming all its sectors were working properly) affect menu layout? A timing/read-speed issue, perhaps?

Im still puzzled as to what the problem actually was/is as the card worked fine in a 6630 for over a year - it cant surely be a fault in the card that for whatever reason the 6630 never picked up on. Im thinking maybe it is a read/write speed issue.

Have ended up passing down the 512mb card to my brother along with the 6630 as together they have no problems. Its just the n70 that seems a little "picky" over which cards it likes. At least the problems solved now anyway. At least ive converted my brother to a symbian user as well now anyway ! lol

Hi Steve,

I very much doubt it's a faulty batch as I've been reading tales of woe from Kingston owners from October last year.
