Just ordered an N70... sat nav questions essential software etc.

Just ordered my new N70.... should recieve it tomorrow...

I've been looking at the various discussions regarding tom tom 5 and the N70 and was wondering whether or not anyone has come up with a solution yet?

I am keen to get some GPS navigation on the n70 for both driving and walking, can anyone recommend any other systems apart from the tomtom setup??

Also anyone recommend any essential software/tips/tricks that i need to be looking into?

Will be ordering a 512mb card soon and a bluetooth gps too so any recommendations there would be greatly appreiciated too...

I use Wayfinder for GPS and I'm quite happy with it. You'll see various reviews on this site in the Review section from different manufacturers - there are quite a few to choose from now. If you want to do walking on a serious scale you're better off with something like Power Navigator from Symbianware (or similar). You can load your own maps (this takes time and can be tricky), but reuslts in a better for walking experience. (Assuming you want the Moving Map for id'ing where you are on footpaths etc.)

Memory cards - check out www.mobymemory.com - can recommend their service and haven't had problems with any cards I've had from them.

Bluetooth GPS - you'll probably end up getting one with the GPS solution, but the best ones have the more recent SIRF III chipset (I think that's right).

Tips and tricks etc could go on and on and on. Watch the site for some content related to this shortly.

For me at least, the TT5 / N70 thing seems to be mostly to do with adding multiple 3rd party POI's. If running "vanilla" TT5 with just one single 3rd party POI (the PocketGPS single file Speed Camera Database) all seems pretty much fine. Occasionally Tom Tom needs a kick to connect to the bluetooth GPS unit when first turning it on, but that only involves going into the GPS setup within Tom Tom and waiting about 10-20s for it to reinitiate a connection, not the regular reboot some people seem to need. This may be because my phone came with the latest v3.0546 firmware on it whereas a lot of the phones still have v2.x firmware.

As for GPS units, Ive got a Holux GPSlim with the newer SIRF III chipset as Rafe mentioned. GPS units with the newer chipset are slightly more expensive than some (I got mine on Ebay for ~£65) but it does mean you can have it in a pocket or in the boot of the car without a direct line of sight of the sky and it will still work reliably - could be especially useful when walking etc.

As to tips, one would be not to bother paying for a shareware automatic key lock app (if you feel you need one) as there are several freeware ones out there that do the job perfectly.

Another would be to possibly avoid the Kingston 512Mb cards as some have had problems with them, although Ive got a 1Gb Kingston and its absolutely fine.
