N70 and Bluetooth v2.0 or v1.2

There has been a lot of discussion back and forth wheather the N70 has
Bluetooth Standard v2.0 + ERD or V1.2 in other threads. I decided to
start a dedicated thread for this because I think it is an interesting issue.

Even if the instruction manual states that the N70 has v.1.2, it is mentioned
all over the net that the N70 does have Bluetooth V2.00 + ERD.

Also; The Bluetooth Qulification Program states that the Nokia N70 indeed
has Bluetooth V2.0 + ERD.

http://qualweb.bluetooth.org/Templat...ProductID=2735

Now the advantages of Bluetooth 2.0 to it's predecessor is said to be the
ability to make concurrent connections to more than one Bluetooth unit
simultaneously, in addittion to the increased transfer speed.
I am no expert on the subject, but I would just like to
know what is correct. According to some sources with Nokia Norway the N70
has BT 2.0, but according to many other sources the N70 does only have v1.2.

As I have understood it, The advantages of BT 1.2 to 1.1 is the increased
stability, reach and the support of stereo bluetooth headset with proper
hi-fi audio. The BT 2.0 does of course have all the abilities of v1.2 and 1.1.

Today I have tested the N70's ability to concurrent connections.
First I paired my N70 with my excellent Holux 236 Slim GPS and ran
TomTom Mobile 5 and checked that everything was ok.
Then I tried to transfer files to/from my phone and pc while connected to
the GPS, result; everything worked just fine.

Now, I know that TomTom connects to the bluetooth GPS through the
bluetooth serial profile, and file transfer uses another profile, so maybe
this was not adequate to verify.

What I did now was to pair my N70 with my laptop (IBM T41 BT 1.1) through
bluetooth serial port (while still N70 and Holux GPS 236 was paired and
TomTom running), and ran Nokia Wireless presenter. Guess what;
I was still able to control my pc (mouse/mediaplayer/powerpoing) with
my N70 while connected to my Holux 236 GPS!!!!

So this proves one thing for me at least, I am able to connect to more than
one Bluetooth unit using the same protocol (Bluetooth serial port)
simultaneously.

My Holux 236 GPS has Bluetooth v1.1, my IBM T41 also has Bluetooth v1.1,
so I am not able to test wheather the N70 has the increased transfer speed
of the Bluetooth v2.0 standard. I guess I would have to find another
N70 and try to transfer a huge file to check!

When I get my handsfree carkit, I will definately try to connect both
through the GPS and the handsfree through bluetooth. But what I can tell
you, is that I also managed to make a Bluetooth-audio-gateway with my
IBM T41 simultaniously as beeing connected to my Bluetooth GPS with TomTom,
so I suspect concurrent connection to the carkit also will work.

I could hear the sounds from TomTom through my PC, and I could also hear
people through my PC's loudspeaker when I made a call through the
Blutetooth audio-Gateway-Bridge.. (While still paired and connected to
the Holux GPS)

So, still, even if not 100% certain yet if N70 has 2.0 or 1.2, I have been able
to make concurrent bluetooth connections with the same BT profile on my N70.
And the other concurrent connections I have succeeded in making with my N70
I have never been able to do on my previous phones!

To me it seems like the N70 does have BT 2.0.

Any other results or comments? Please post!

I've just read the help function on the N70 and it states that you can connect more than 1 device at a time, therfore is it not v2.0??

Quote:
There can be several active Bluetooth connections at a time. For example, if you are connected to a headset, you can also transfer files to another compatible device at the same time

I tried to pair my N70 with my Omiz Bluetooth Stereo Headphones to no avail, so maybe it doesn't have the A2DP profile?!

BT 1.2 as far as I know. Definitely no A2DP (before S60 3rd Edition devices like the N91 and others).

What I've tested...

From another thread:

again tried to send picture from wifes 6230 to N70 while connected to headset, this also failed

So it would appear that you can NOT have multiple connections

I also tried the above and had the same results on N70.

But, I was able to make multiple connections when they were within the same BT profile.

I've even able to send files via BT between PC and my Nokia 6600 and n70, I was also able to send files between n6600 n70, all while being tethered. I was also able to successfully connect more than one headset at time.Yeah

But in all the testing, which was extensive, I was never able to have multiple connections when using different BT profiles.

So, it would appear the "multiple connections" of BT 2.0 would be of like BT profiles where multiple connections across different BT profiles would not be possible.

Exactly my findings, strangly enough I could do the same with a 6680 (BT1.2) as well

Hmm, some varying results I see...

Now I made an even more extensive test..

First I connected (paired) my N70 with my SU-8W Bluetooth
Keyboard (Message: Connected to SU-8W). Now I made a Bluetooth
audio gateway bridge between my PC and the N70, and the "headset" icon
appeared in the display of the N70 (Message: Connected to IBM T41).
Using my BT Keyboard I now started TomTom Mobile 5 and connected (paired)
my N70 with my Holux GPSlim 236 (Message: Connected to HoluxGPSSlim236).
Now I started a file transfer from the PC to the Nokia N70 (Huge PDF file),
and when the file transfer had started from the PC, I started a file transfer
(still using my SU-8W Keyboard) from FExplorer on the phone to the PC,
while the phone transfered the file to the PC, the speed on the transfer from
the PC to the phone seemed to slow down, but increased again
when the file transfer from the phone to the PC ended, while all this
was going on I was using my SU-8W BT Keyboard to play audio from
TomTom, and I could hear the audio through the speakers of my PC
from the BT audio bridge with the N70. (And yes I checked many
times that TomTom was actually receiving signals from the GPS, and
yes it was!!)

No matter what version BT the N70 has, I have to say I am impressed!

I will try the same with my old 6600 to see what happens..

Hmm.. I remember having read somewhere that support for Stereo
Bluetooth headset on Symbian devices will be implemented in the
upcoming Symbian S60 v9.x.

So maybe it is not "out of the box" possible to use Stereo BT headsets
on Symbian OS previous to 9.x !??

Still, there is software that makes this possible, a player called MSI BluePlayer
is supposed to make this possible on any Symbian S60 device!!

Read theese:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Bluetooth-1-2-...QQcmdZViewItem
http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/techbuz...9237899,00.htm

If you search more you may find more info about this "MSI BluePlayer", I have not found
any more info about it, or where to get it..

If anyone finds where to get it, please post here!!

BTW! Are you guys using the standard Microsoft Certified BT (Win XP SP2) drivers?

I removed the MS Certf. drivers and installed original Widcomm Drivers.

I had to, to be able to to file transfers, audio gateway etc... These services
did not work with the MS Certf. IBM Bluetooth drivers.

The only thing I was able to to with the MS Certf. IBM Bluetooth drivers
was to establish a connection with Nokia PC Suite 6.6.0.18..

EinZtein, are you sure you have set up your Bluetooth correct on your pc??

I just tried now to first establish a Bluetooth audio gateway to my pc,
turned on some music on the N70, listening to the audio coming out
of the pc's speakers I established a BT serial connection and started
synchronizing the N70 with the PC.. And while the audio was playing,
and the synchronizing was running, I also managed to send a file from
the pc to the phone with bluetooth file transfer... And voila, synchonizing
done!!

Hey, I was actually able to find the MSI BluePlayer on some chinese
web pages. This player is able to play back STEREO on STEREO Bluetooth
headsets on any S60 smartphone, i think...

Here's the link, please post feedback/results if it works, as I do not have Bluetooth
Stereo headset myself:

I do not know if the file is freeware or commerce/copyrighted, i looked under
the "about", and there is no info about trialware or registered etc..

i'm pretty sure it uses BT2.0. the bluetooth qualification site wouldn't make such mistakes, as they are "the bluetooth guys" and won't have interest in other areas of the n70. also, as you all know, the nseries website has been given a new look and the technical specifications updated, where it states for the n70: " Integrated Bluetooth wireless technology v.2.0". this has been changed with the new design (previously stated 1.2) which would indicate a typo rectified.

i'm afraid i still don't own a n70 myself (really hard to get hands on where i live) so i can't test it myself, but couldn't someone simply transfer some files to/from a computer with a bluetooth 2.0 dongle and see what the speeds are? the theoretical maximum seems to be about 2.1 mbit, real life speed should be above 1 mbit though (which would already exeed BT1.2's theoretical max speed).
i got a 2.0 dongle here, so why doesn't one of you send me his n70 so i can check it out?

No joy with that file and my BT Stereo headphones. Instaled okay, but couldn't find anything in the phone's GUI to control it. Tried to pair it with the headphones (for stereo audio) but it wouldn't.

I dont read chinese, but I assume I d/l the right file...
