Nokia China announce N6708

Nokia China have announced the N6708 - a UIQ touchscreen phone. The phone features a 1.3 MP camera, a mini SD expansion card slot, a Chinese localised Office application, and runs Symbian 7 and UIQ 2.1. This phone is expected to be only available in the Chinese market where data input is eased by the use of handwriting reognition. The N6708 is an ODM (rebranded) version of the BenQ P31. The specifications are the same as the BenQ 31, but there have been several software tweaks. There are some pictures of the device here from Zol.com.

I'm not surprised that Nokia are not making much of this over here as the device is (probably) just for China and after all its just an OEM of a BenQ phone but I'm surprised that its not mentioned on either the Symbian or UIQ websites!

Perhaps Nokia are intending some announcement at the Nokia Mobility Conference (NMC) 2-3 November and want to keep it relatively quiet until them?

I suppose the interesting question is will Nokia use UIQ in any other mobiles? As its Symbian based I can't see them having any fundimental problem with using it (obviously not because they are) but I thought Series 60 was going to support pen based input in the future so there may be some conflict there.

Nothing "fishy". It happened (the phone was announced). It is not a global Nokia product, but one local for the China market only. Nokia has had different/unique products for China before (phones not sold anywhere else).

I have come across specs. that N 6708 is having a 1.3 MP CMOS camera, what is the advantage over VGA camera?

VGA indicates resolution 640x480 pixels = 0.3MP (megapixels, millions of pixels). So, a 1.3MP camera has bigger resolution; 1 million more pixels (four times more) than on a VGA resolution camera.

how come nokia didnt incorporate the keypad entry for text input on the phone? wouldn't it be such a waste of the phone's keypad? it would have been an added feature of the phone.
