I've heard a rumour that Nokia will be releasing a 9300i,
The main difference will be added WiFi,
I stress, it is only a rumour unless someone can confirm it?
Anyway, I'll be sticking with my 9500, at least it's got a camera,

Carl,
Well, it is a rumour until if/when it is officially announced. But, to me, it seems quite credible. I believe the rumour originates from this site: http://www.mlife.at/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=823&Itemid=2 (it's in German).
So given I'm reading that right it's a 3G version of the 9300 with wifi and blackberry support?
Holy crap!
Damn it, I've only just bought a 9300!

No 3G (according to the article). It also mentions more internal memory, but I don't see the point in that - 80MB is plenty, unless of course we are talking mini hard-drives here, but I kinda doubt it...
it has been approved by FCC : http://my-symbian.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=23545
I might buy it if it has better signal reception than the 9300 and if its browser has better javascript support (ie : full gmail support)
I was expecting this to be announced at the Smartphone show. Its a very minor update. It adds Wifi and a few software tweaks. I wouldn't be surprised if it had support for lots of email systems too. Maybe announcement has been delayed until 9300 stocks are cleared?
I can't believe it does not have 3G!
I would have been very tempted if it had.
FCC 9300i page including user guide here.
To add a 3G-band to the 9300/9500 would be a very complex and costly operation - practically constitution a redesign of the entire RF-section of the phone. Not something you "simply do". Thus I would deem it highly unlikely that an "i"-update would encompass this. Normally the "i" has something to do with more memory, better display, improved camera or something minor like that. Or maybe WIFI for the 9300.
I have no doubt that we will see a 3G communicator at some point in the future, but it will be a new model entirely - 9310/9510 or something...
Yeah I am sure a 3G communicator is in the works, but I wouldn't expect to see anything about it for some time. I would guess it would be available some time this time next year (but that's juts a guess).
Nice revision!, if this was available at the time I purchased my 9500 (Meaning if the 9300 had wi-fi) it would have been an non contest.
So am I misreading this or does this make the 9300 just a 9500 minus the camera? I'm kinda missing the point here really, it seems a pointless addition to the phone when the 9500 already has it.

I think it's a size thing, Switch. I have both right now, and can tell you that the 9300 really is *significantly* smaller. The 9500 can be a pain to lug around, while the 9300 is like carrying a regular mobile phone from a few years back - like the 6310.
I guess you need to hold them both in your hands to really appreciate the size difference. That extra bulk gives the 9500 a much better keyboard though.

Exactly, I find the 9300 much more practicle for day to day use, the 9500 isn't overly big but can be a pain sometimes due to it's bulk. The 9300 on the other hand is the perfect phone size, it's not too small that it's hard to use but not too large that it gets in the way.
9300i will be a great phone, should kill 9500 sales a bit though....I probably haven't used the camera on the 9500 more than a dozen times in nearly a years use.
Having said all the above I won't be getting a 9300i, I can live with the size of the 9500 and it's not getting all that much use these days and has been replaced with the even larger I-Mate JasJar 😮
TBH I'd rather the 9500 were larger for a 640x320 desktop and slightly larger keys, after this time I still prefer the 9210 keyboard.

I suppose the new E61 (see news-section) could be considered an form of 3G Communicator....
... except that I'm not really a fan of the Blacberry'esque form factor. I consider the bread box design superior.

I totally agree, and the 9500 is much better than the 9300 (which is a smartphone and not a Communicator) having a small keyboard and a small screen. I would never trade a Communicator for a smartphone.

I'm sure Nokia would not discontinue the Communicator series, and serious businessmen the style of whom comprises a Nokia Communicator would never get down to an "E-series" "smartphone" which is far from being an equivalent to the 9500 in concept although I would certainly like to see all those features added to the successor of the 9500.
I think Rafe is right saying that a 9600 will be out by this time next year. Come on Nokia, live up to the challenge even earlier.
In addition to W-LAN ( 802.11g), the 9300i will also have T9 on the cover phone, larger internal memory (128MB), an IM client built-in and a larger battery (1100Mah). And various other minor firmware improvements.
Raven wrote:the 9300i will also have T9 on the cover phone,
I'm sorry, hate it with a passion. And with a decent keyboard in the communicator, who needs it tbh *shrugs*
Now, the 9600 (and whatever it may contain) would be nice. Thank god it wont be released, realisticly for another 11 mths (when my new contract runs out) 😉
However, I also think there will be alot more oppertunities with WiFi and also, dare I say it, FREE WiFi networks.... *gulps*
I'd like to see more developers taking advantage of the screen size, and I'm also thinking there should be a form of distribution for movies / shows for it.
And no, before I get my hands slapped, it would be a legal file sharing network. How could you prove you own the movie, so you can download it tho?
Thoughts on a postcard please.

Ah, but in my notion of a 9500 successor you'll be able to access a lot more functionality form the coverphone; I used MSN and IRC while walking down the street on my 6600, and it's nice to be able to do so one-handed using only your thumb; without T9 it's not terribly practical.
