EPOC - The Electronic Piece of Cheese Behind Symbian OS
Steve Litchfield enthuses over his Nokia 9500 Communicator and looks back at its Psion roots. The best of the old and the best of the new, all in one box? Almost.

Good article Steve!
BTW 1: Clove ( www.clove.co.uk) is manufacturing the Psion Series 5mx Pro with UK ROM-image. These units come with an everlasting screen-cable and a slightly better screen. According to Chris - the owner - they manufacture about 100 units a month.
BTW 2: I hope to finalise the first early alpha version of SymPoc very soon. SymPoc is an OPL application with the aim of narrowing the gap between the ER1-ER5 formats and the Symbian "ER6 and later" formats. I'm concentrating on Psion Word <-> Symbian Word at the moment.

The ones from PsionFlexi don't have the same tooling holes and are supposed to be far more robust in use.

I should have written ""everlasting"", not "everlasting"..:-)
Anyways, my 9210 developed screen cable problems after less than one year...another Psion feature carried forward...let's wait another 6-8 months...that should be well beyond the 2 x sigma point for the 9500 & 9300.

Stanley,
Please qualify 'best quality'.
- Are they the PsionFlexi type? Or can you provide other substantiation of this claim?
- How much have they been tested? And what types of tests? How many open-close can you guarantee before next replacement?
- Any references?
Kind regards
Martin

Dear Ewan,
We created our own tool, using the psion design, mounting holes outside the outline of the flexi cable and are removed once they are cut out.

Stanley,
In general I think this sounds good.
I'm currently operating in Singapore and Malaysia and I think there is high demand for 5mx / MC218 screen cables in this corner of the world. There are still a lot of those machines floating around among journalists and professionals.
I'm very busy at the moment with Free2move and some OPL projects, but I hope to order some test samples from you later on and if this goes well we could establish some much needed repair service.
You can contact me via the Free2move website: www.f2m.com.my
cheers
Martin

Dear Martin,
Many thanks for your feedback and wish to have the opportunity to establish repair service in Singapore and Malaysia.
I have 4 Psion 5mx, 1 Ericsson 218C ,1 Psion S5, 1 Psion REVO , 1 Psion 618C ( REVO in Chinese version) and 1 Psion 3C.
My willing to keep these nice machines stay with us a little bit longer. I belivery that still have many Psion users can't live without such nice machine. But, when they got the screen flexi problem. It's means " a lot of money will gone" if they need to replace them. I can understand that the high price from any other sources which sell screen flexi & fitting service offered due to less screen flexi production and high tooling cost. I try to ignore these issues and would like to help some people who want to keep their Psion alive.
I am also consider to create the screen cable for Psion 3C. I know, my money will never come back to my pocket . But , you know.... The world also need some stupid guy like me....
Best Regards
Stanley

In fact, I have a working model of 5mx together with the F2M03AC2 module. So I can do PsiWin link to PC over Bluetooth (with a F2M01 or 3rd party USB plug in the PC). I can even transfer files between 5mx to P900 over Bluetooth. And I've managed to get the 5mx to print on a Canon i80 over Bluetooth as well.
I have a small OPL routine to do pairing and configuration of the F2M03AC2 from the 5mx.
But this requires some engineering investment before I dare to announce it as a product, which I don't have at the moment. I need to find a way to integrate the module cleverly inside the 5mx, if need be sacrificing the serial connector entirely. As you know the 5mx has only two logical serial ports, one is used for IrDA and the other for the Honda (the netBook has three). So one has to go, and I believe that should be the Honda since it tends to wear out anyway.
Once I have some financial space in Free2move I will proceed with this project.
