I'd like to paint mine but I'm a bit unsure of how to do it so that it looks good and lasts well in normal everyday use. ie what kind of paint and tools should I use etc.

I am not an expert on this but I think I can suggest a method. The external case for the nokia is available for change from your nokia service centre (should be around 14$US). If you can get one, then you can spray paint that (mettalic would be nice I guess). Just make sure you apply the right masks for the lcd screen etc.. Once you are done, you could ask NSC to change the cover for you...
