Cannot restore backed up P800 files onto P910i

Help! I can't restore my backed-up P800 Jotter file to my new P910i which contains lots of valuable pieces of information that I need to access.

Am I expecting too much of the PC Suite here? I notice from other threads that many regard it as a pile of s**t. I followed advice and made sure that just before I traded my P800 in for a new P910i, I did one last full backup. I've always noticed that the backups are placed into one single '.ecs' file, rather than creating folders that I would be able to access individually - that has always worried me a little.

Anyway, I now find that the restore button on the PC Suite is greyed out when I put the P910i on the cradle and select a P800 '.ecs' file to restore. If I try to use the Import facility, I'm told that the backup file is not a recognisable format!!! 😡

All I want is my Jotter file. Anybody have any advice they could offer?

The backup files between P800 and PXX0 are not compatible. You should have synched your data with Outlook and then synched data back to the new phone. You can also unzip the backup files (rename them to .zip and open them) and see if you can mine your data out from the file and then put back in the phone. This incompatibility has been clearly announced in the FAQ of SE.

I should have read the SE FAQ.

Well, your advice worked! For anyone who's interested (as this should apply to other applications and not only Jotter), here's how I did it:

1. I renamed the backup file I wanted from .ecs to .zip.
2. I then opened it using WinZip.
3. I located the 'filestore.dat.txt' file which give a full index of all files backed up.
4. I searched for 'Jotter' which showed me that the file I was looking for was number 17 (in my case).
5. I searched for a file called '17.dat' and then copied it onto my Documents folder on the P910i.
6. Using the File Manager application on the P910i, I located the '17.dat' file and clicked on it. The Jotter application automatically kicked into life and all of my lost information was there!

It was then just a case of copying and pasting each line from the '17.dat' file into the standard Jotter application in order to ensure everything is stored in the default Jotter file. I can then deleted the 17.dat file and was done. 😃
