Question 6620 software - same as ?? 6600?

I saw a post via a google search from someone looking @ a 6600, saying the 6620 was coming, and trying to decide between the 6600 and 7600, or waiting for the 6620 "with its Symbian OS". That implies the 6600 doesn't have one.

When searching for software to download, I don't want to DL something that is incompatible because I'm a dummy not knowing what works with what.

SO if it says 6600 am I OK? Or what other phones?

Thanks!

GhostDog will become famous soon enough
The 6600 and 6620 run on the same version of Symbian OS - Symbian 7.0s.The difference is in the UI - the 6600 runs Series 60 2.0 and the 6620 runs Series 60 2.1 but its pretty safe to say that most of the applications that work on the 6600 will work on the 6620.

Technically it should, but there were a few times when I had some slight incompatibilities with the two.....it could of just been me though.

Or it may just be that the 6600 you tested has the early v3.42.1 firmware which has quite a few compatibility issues, although this firmware has the least amount of other problems in my opinion,i upgraded and then downgraded as it was doing my head in.

User Interface.

The 6620 uses a newer version and as such should not suffer as many problems and is generally more user friendly.

UI on the 6620 - Answering a call while doing ...

Speaking of User Interfaces, the biggest problem I've seen with the phone / Symbian OS is because the phone DOES have such rich function.

80% of my phone calls come in "you have a phone call, press 1 to accept it" because we have a "follow me around" system at work.

The problem arises if I am doing ANYTHING I have to press the task button, switch to the telephone "application", and THEN press 1.

I have run into a few 6600 applications I tried to run and they would not. Unfortunately I have not kept a list. When I emailed the developers several said they ran on 6600, but not 6620 and may have updates in the future. I guess the differences must be deeper than is apparent.

More User Friendly?

There a few thing in the UI that are hardly friendly on the 6620. I sometimes wonder if somebody actually uses the phone much before they sell them. Three examples:

1. Receive a message from AT&T when somebody hits my voicemail and punches in their number. 6620 does not have an apparent way to get the number out of the text message short of forwarding it to a new editable message, copy the number and paste back at the top level where I dial. On my old Treo 600 I could this with a one hand hi-light the number with the 5-way control and hit dial. Very fast. On 6620, multi step process.

2. In the Contact List I sync quite a bit, over 800+ entries. Sometimes I will find a number is in the wrong field. Nothing worse than calling somebody back late at night to find out it was their home number not their work number. I would like a quick way to change the "detail" to another existing label, swap home and work for example. Should be easy right? You can can only edit detail which requires a detail retype, who thought of that? OK I will just cut and past the number. Hold the pencil key and select the number, no "cut" availabe, only copy. OK I copy. Oops I have to add 'home" detail if it is not there. In my example I would have to add "home" first then paste the number. Oh, but I have to go back and delete the old "work" number" before I am done. And how an option to search the contact list by company name.

3. I have the correct Nokia BT car kit. One option in the middle of a call is to swap to handset. This modal button will sometimes stop working. I have to remove the battery to get soft OS reset which fixes the problem. I email Nokia tech support about this and another issues with the car kit hard wire cable connection. 10 days to get a response back that it does not work as advertised. No kidding. I tell Nokia they should change their site as it say it does. After 4 weeks it is still the same site , saying you have a BT or hardwire option.

The phone RF reception is head shoulders above the Treo or any other phone they have. The great reception keep using this phone in spite of the issues, but I wish they would release an OS update. - Keith

For your #1 try "Options -> Find" with the message open.

About your #2, when you have text selected, you can hit the 'C' key to clear/delete the selected part while the pencil key is pressed down (if you want it copied first, just hit the left softkey which labels should be saying "Copy" and do the 'C' after that). Also, make sure you use the latest PC Suite (nokiausa.com/pcsuite seems to have only 6.2, but if you go to http://www.nokia.com/pcsuite and pick the 7610 as your phone, you'll get 6.4).

Option --> Find. I missed that, thanks for straightening me out with my user error.

The other work around will save me a step. I would hope they change the UI to allow "swap detail", but that will take a while if it ever happens.

I will also D/L the updated 6.4 PC Suite and see if it is any better at syncing.
