Where did the gateway go?

I just got my 6600 and i'm having problems configuring my Internet connection. My service provider gives me WAP only through GPRS (it's very cheap too). Now, the GPRS connection works fine and my service provider's configuration messages worked as well. But, WAP just won't work. I'm pretty sure it's because the "Gateway IP Address" option in the access point configuration is missing. I tried configuring the access point using my provider's messages and manually and in both cases this option is totally missing.

Does anybody have any idea where the option went and how to get it back?

Are the settings you have from your operator for WAP 1.*? The 6600 has WAP 2.0 and the settings are different (as you've noticed).

I guess it's WAP 1. My operator doesn't even support my phone yet so the config messages are for older phones.

Does that mean I won't be able to surf using my 6600 if my operator doesn't support it? Can I setup my phone in a WAP 1.* style somehow?

Worst case i'll register for their full GPRS service but that costs a whole lot more.

I'm with O2 in the UK and have managed to get GSM WAP working by sending the 7650 settings from their website. The missing Gateway IP Address confused me too doing it manually. Despite my tariff including 500 free WAP minutes they "forgot" to include the proper access point. Probably hoping Id use GPRS instead 🙄

Also the ability to send MMS is disable on my account by default despite me signing up with ONLINE 200 which comes with free MMS. I have to wait till the next billing period to be able to send any. Bunch of idiots 😊

Do you mean the configuration message worked? I sent myself my operator's configuration messages which worked on my 7650 and it didn't work for the 6600. I still don't see the gateway in the access point configuration.

Anyway, my operator is Orange Israel and they give me unlimited WAP access through GPRS for only 10 NIS a month (that's about 2 US dollars). They are even nice enough to put a built in converter which converts any site to WAP on the fly. You transparently surf to a URL as if it were WAP and it converts it. It tries to retain the original site design and even sends the site's images. That can add up to a lot of bandwidth.

What I'd give for that 😃

When it does happen we can all move to instant messaging and push to talk apps, thus bypassing all the silly pricing structures operators insist on. In the future theyll be nothing more than mobile ISPs with any luck.
