Symbian Software

Is it just me or is this whole mobile phone software thing getting out of hand with no real method:

For example I bought an application through Handango, and then needed to reinstall it. well I could find the file to download. I had lost the reg key. Where do I get that from. And it seems Handango and the software company don’t keep records of your purchase so it took many emails and me having to show proof of using the package before they would send the key again.

Another time I purchased a PV Player from Handango, and entered the key. It didnt work. I tried emailing and calling but no answer and I needed the package there and then. so I tried to purchase it again in fear that I had entered my IMEI number incorrectly but it spat out the same key. About 30 emails later through the automated service system I got the correct key but I had paid for the app twice and got no use from it for the first two months.

Also this whole thing about trial apps is great, I mean I come from a generation of people who have never had to pay for software. Lets face it if you couldn’t get a copy of it you just wouldnt have it. However I tried out the Trial version of flexicam having heard about the image quality but the trial version (no matter what setting you use) only spits out the lowest res images. So I trawled the web to find that the previous version before was freeware and showed me what I wanted to see.

however if it hadnt had been for a comprehensive review on this forum and trawling the web for a proper trial then I wouldn’t have looked twice as this app - which is one of the few which does deserve attention.

I do realise that IMEI registering is a very good system to protect software, but for how long? I mean I can understand not just releasing serial numbers for software as these small time developers would get nothing from it - but hackers do find ways and they will do soon...

By far the best trial I have ever used are the Nokia Try before you buy ones which allow three full programs uses before expiring, because lets face it if you cant use the whole program then how do you know you will need it - I think overprotecting the software for the sake of the small time people also stops them getting the recognition for a great piece of software.

And finally - how stupid is it that you cannot port software over to another phone. Quite simply this is ridiculous. People update their phones so often nowadays that we will be spending hundreds of pounds every year on the same apps. It also means that some of the small time apps which you may not renew might get lost forever.

I mean I emailed one company about a new reg key as I got a new phone through my insurance as the last one was damaged (should phone insurance now cover application loss as well?) and they obliged but again it took a few emails and some not in my native language.

My main problem is that for what is already a huge market especially with gaming software and will be one of the biggest software revolutions of all time I think its built on very weak foundations, some people need to step in with new mobile software piracy laws or guidelines, a unique way similar to Nokia's so that full trials can take place and to ensure that (because you are not purchasing a hard copy) sites like handango keep records of all purchases with serial numbers, links to download software again and ability for the user to change this information (maybe allowing say three IMEI ports a year to account for damaged phones and upgrading)....

...So who wants to start a company?

Now that I think of it, I am quite lucky that my 7650 couldn't boot after 2 days only from it's purchase (Nokia gave me a new 7650/new IMEI - with the old case cover- after more than a month). I didn't had time to buy any app during these 2 days...

Anyway, good point there pasa...

Good point. As all those who have just upgraded from a P800 to a P900 will atest, it's a pain in the backside. Though I did eventually get all of my software onto the P900 without having to pay for any again.

However, with regards the above point, Handango does keep a record off all your purchases. When you log in you can go to a page with a list of everything you have bought from them along with reg codes etc. Though, of course, the codes are mostly useless as they are tied to IMEI's. Epocware do the same but use reg codes. In fact, Epocwares system worked very well and all of their software was up and running within minutes of getting the P900.

I was offered by handango to discuss getting a new IMEI with the Developer company rather than themselves which I thought a bit strange especially since the developing company were not too happy to oblige but its good to hear that some people are having better luck...

I've always thought it more obvious to contact the company that wrote the software rather than the reseller (which isn't generating the codes, as they're based on company/software specific methods even if they're usually all based on the phone's IMEI number).

I've now within the last year or so alone changed phones 3 or 4 times (all Series 60), and I have asked for new codes for pretty much as many applications from the respective companies. I've always gotten the new codes.

Right for all those who obviously have had better expereinces than me with porting reg keys please read these extracts from emails between myself and yellow computing...

Intially they resent me the program but it was mms cam not Pixomat the programme I was trying to port...

Me to them:
Quote:
Hi this is the program for MMS cam and not for Pixomat which is the program which I have the key for - I think I might have bought the key for both but found I did not need the MMSCAm program.
Their reply:
Quote:
> That's why all the code didn't work, you should told me what
> application you mean. We have only one registration of you and
> that's for MMSCAM. We can only send you the code for this one
> and not for PixOmat. You have to send us an order confirmation of
> PixOmat, otherwise we can't send the code. Please contact the
> online-shop where you bought it, they should be able to resend this
> mail.
>
> Best regards,
>
> Dominik Nied
However they clearly hadnt kept a record that I had bought Pixomat aswell:
Quote:
> That's strange you see the thing is I don't think it was called
> Pixomat when I bought it - I am sure it was called something else -
> has this program been re-released and would the shop I bought it from
> have supplied the Pin code without going through you?
>
> Why do you not keep a record of this....
To which they reply:
Quote:
Dear Mustafa,

it is your job to keep this mails save not our's, but we have found
an e-mail of your purchase.

Here is the code for PixOmat:

*********

Your are right the product had a different name before, but when
you bought it it was already named "PixOmat". Please downlaod
the software form www.yellowcomputing.de and register it with the
serial number from above.

Best regards,

Dominik Nied
mmmm, I dont exactly call this cutomer service and it is clear that this company was confused over who was to supply the codes when it came to it. Aparrently it was "up to me" to keep records of my purchases which I normally do but any online shop or developing company handing out codes should surely also keep record of this.

He also claims that he has no record of me buying this software but then freely hands out a new code which makes me think he just didnt look hard enough.

I hope for better next time...

The other problem I also forgot to point out with porting software is that many of us sell our phones claiming they come with programs already loaded so should we be allowed to get new serial numbers again surely this is software theft? comments?

Of course it is. If one sells the phone with purchased applications, you can't get new keys for a new phone without breaking most companie's licensing rules.

I dont thinks thats very fair for the person who brought the phone! I brought my phone 2nd hand on ebay an NGAGE and It had Opera installed on the Mmc .. Being new to symbian phones when i went home i copied all the data on the mmc to my hdd .. I then formatted the mmc and filled it with mp3s etc..a few hours later i copied the exact files back into the mmc and when i clicked on Opera i get an error " system Error " I tried emailing opera no reply and then I downloaded the Opera software from the site and I reinstalled it .. But after I reinstalled it (Phone mem )I get a 14 day trial wtf!!Also tried unistalling it and installing it onto my mmc where all the original opera files were Since before i copied all the data from mmc to hdd i didnt remember getting a 14 day trial msg but the full version !!! Since Opera was included with m Ngage doesnt that mean I own the full version of Opera also ?? I got the system error not only with opera but , uvsmstyle and settingswizard ! I am from australia and the seller was also from aust .. I welcome your comments Still havent recieved reply from Opera .. at least telling me that I dont own the full version or not!!!

That comes down to whether you agreed to buy just the phone or the phone AND the 3rd party software on it. If you just bought the phone, then the person you bought it off still owns the license to use the software and should have removed the software from the phone before handing it over.

If you bought both, then the person you bought it off should have given you all the license agreements and keys with the phone. Though it would be down to each individual piece of software's license along with the laws in your country as to whether or not the license can be sold on.

However, it's likely you only bought the phone and have no right to use any of the third party software on it unless you buy yourself a license to do so. To stay entirely legal and above board, anyone selling a smartphone should format it or in some way return it to factory condition before selling it on.
