Compatibility with current S60 applications
Nokia has told that the 6600 has an enhanced version of the Series 60 platform, in many places referred as the "Series 60 v2.0". Is this new version backward compatible with current S60 applications that are available for 3650/7650?
My-Symbian.com reports that Epocware is already developing an application for the 6600:

"Epocware - Paragon Software Group is proud to present at one time with the new Nokia 6600 probably the first software solution adapted for this new phone - SlovoEd dictionaries. These dictionaries were demonstrated today on Nokia Press Event in Helsinki together the new Nokia 6600."

Maybe guys from Epocware can comment on this?

Re: Compatibility with current S60 applications
Correcting myself: Series 60 v2.0 in the 6600 is based on Symbian OS 7.0s, so I guess it can't run current S60 applications.

just read the PDF's published @ www.forum.nokia.com (or attached by me in the 7650 forum a couple of days ago)
or just read previous messages
anyway, nokia stated that most programs made for 0.9 and 1.x will work on 2.x, but there are new APIs etc. so new programs made expecially for 2.x won't work on older phones. also, some old programs that use lower-level programming may not work on 2.x phones

Thanks faquick.
I bet many others will be asking this too, so here's a direct link to all the Series 60 2.0 documentation at forum.nokia.com:

Nokia mentioned this on their press conference. S60 apps should work on S60 2.0 platform.

should we wait and read some reports about this compatibility issue, before buying 6600?
another thing i think of is the translation process of old API to new API, so called "wrapper" by nokia, will this process result in performance loss? for example, running old API applications slower that then 7650/3650

Yes most of the apps should but as i understood from reading the PDF's they haven't reached compatibility on all levels. We'll just have to wait and see.
Performance loss?I don't think so.

Those applications that are written using only public SDK headers should work OK. But if any undocumented interfaces are used, it's not guaranteed that they work correctly. Not even in Series 60 1.x platform, but also in 2.0 because some interfaces may have changed and some even removed.
We are still suffering transition from 7650 to 3650 because not all developers have updated their programs to support e.g. installation on MMC. If developers are lazy and their customers do not demand updates, we will see similar problems with 1.x => 2.0 transition.

I'm pretty sure Symbian 7.0 has BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY, if not they're loosing a lot of market.

deathmonger, there are more issues then just the OS in question.
Like i said,i read in forum Nokia PDF's that they haven't reached compatibilty on all levels.
BTW: I'd take developer's word on the subject - ssimeonbubblegum's

Series 60 Apps compatibility
Some applications for Nokia 7650 / 3650 will work on Nokia 6600 phone
without any changes, some of them may need to be rebuilt without making changes to code, others must be completely rewritten. That's what I understood from Nokia presentation.
