Cool 6630 firmware | mem card | sim | RealPlayer issues

Hey fellas....

I'm new here and hoping for some help on these issues:

1. I recently bought the Nokia 6630 from Karachi [I am a resident of Pakistan]. The firmware is ver. 2.39.15 11-11-04 RM-1. I know it is pretty old, but thats what I have. The Nokia authorized service center does not have any updates on when they will have the latest firmware upgrade. I understand the latest is ver. 3.45.11.3. Can anyone tell me what major changes should I expect in the new firmware? I have a business trip scheduled to China at the end of this month, probably Shanghai. I was thinking I would get the firmware upgraded there. Is the firmware in China going to be any different from my phone, as in language differences etc.? Also, is there any reason NOT to get the firmware upgraded?

2. On the same trip, I hope to purchase a larger memory RS-MMC for my phone [mine came with 64MB]. Is it safe to purchase a 256MB or larger RS-MMC as I have seen them in the market, are they compatible with the 6630, cuz I read somewhere that 128MB is the largest that the 6630 can accept. Also, I recently saw an advertisement by Kingston [the memory chip maker] about their RS-MMC's. Are they compatible with the Nokia 6630 [i do not know if they are dual-voltage or not- any one know?]

3. My cellular network is lousy, so I volunteered as a tester for a new cellular network Telenor [launching tomorrow!]. I inserted the tester sim into the 6630 as I wanted to check out the GPRS connections speeds, but the phone just wouldnt enter the Menu. I would press the menu button, the light grey shadow box of the menu would appear and then go back to the standby mode [wallpaper] without displaying the menu at all! Works fine with my old [read lousy] network. Has anyone else had similar problems?

4. I converted an mpeg file to mpeg-4 and transferred it to my mem card. Now the realplayer can see the file, but wont play it. Just says "unable to play media clip". Is mpeg-4 not supported by the realplayer? Does Helix support it? Should I use 3gp format instead? Help!!

Too many questions?? Sorry! Just wanna know why......

Thanks!

Q 2 and 4

I can answer your questions 2 and 4.

2. As far as i am aware you can use any current size memory card in your phone (rs-mmc of course) as long as it's dual voltage (DV). The nokia 6630 only supports use of DV cards as it uses the lower of the two voltages needed to run the cards. I'm using an ATP DV 256Meg card in mine with no problems at all.

4. The nokia 6630 does support playback of mp4 files, although i know that it has to be a specific size. Try ensuring that your output file is 176 x Z, or 128 x Z QCIF or QQCIF respectively. Where Z= the other dimension of the clip having maintained the aspect ratio for conversion. (As long as its no larger than 176x144 or 128x96)

Hey thanks man.....

I just looked around and I saw this website which displayed ATP DV RS-MMC for sale and they had 128 MB, 256 MB and 512 MB.....upto 2 GB. BUT! The details under the 256 MB said it is ideal for 6630 and 100% compatible, but under 512 MB it said no such thing! Funny isn't it? I just needed it confirmed by someone who is using an MMC larger than 256 MB....sorry I wrote 128 MB in my first post, I guess I meant 256 MB.

As for Real Player, I think you may be right. I encoded the video at 320 x Z which I read somewhere displays a full-screen video on the phone. Guess not! I will try it with the 172 x Z size.

Thanks again buddy for the fast reply!

Hey Guy

I don't think the 256MB can be work in nokia 6260. Because I bought a 256MB and it can't play MP3 song continuous. it means you have to play one song by song. I don't know why. Nokia said 256MB is not stable for 6260.
