The successor must be a new communicator and since there is no new communicator (and there is no rumor about a new one) then am not sure there is a successor.
am not sure about these news.

- internal memory 16gb (like N96) or 32gb;
- better/faster processor and more RAM;
- better battery, they have to double the Mhz at least...;
- a lot more apps as standard or a better Download! Tool;
- 2 SIMcard slots--> I use 2 cellphones, and in the early days of the cells this possibility was more frequent, I know it is still possible (check here http://www.m-99.co.uk/nokia-e90.html and scroll down till the middle of the page) but I don't trust it that much.

If you look at the N97, I think Nokia is well placed to come out with an update that in E-series format would be a worthy successor to E90.

Smile Nokia N900

Today on Tweakers.net I came across a screenshot of the Nokia N900 Maemo 5 . It seems to be originated from a Russian Phone Reviewer . The N900 will be announced on sept 2 on Nokia World .

I have had my E90 for 2 years or so. It's been a great boon to my every day life but these are my biggest gripes:

1. It's slow. Not all the time, just the times when you really need it to be fast! Switching between closed and open, and between programs is just too slow. Sometimes it's so slow you end up doing things twice because you think you didn't press the buttons properly.

2. Fiddly interface. This is sort of compounded by the above. The interface isn't always intuitive, you frequently have to delve into settings to do things.

3. Poor calendar. For a business device the calendar just doesn't cut it.

4. 2.5mm jack with poor sound quality.

The N900 looks really promising. I don't think there's anything wrong with symbian operating system, but S60 is designed for phones with small screens and a numeric keypad. This linux distribution just looks more grown up - multitasking looks slicker, and it just has a more desktop feel.

Maybe they'll bring out an E900, with a few more hard buttons (I could still do with my application shortcut buttons, numeric row and extra keys). But I might just get an N900 anyway!

Duncan.

P.S.

My favourite features of the E90:

1. Active notes

2. Excellent messaging suite

3. Web and connectivity to the internet is more reliable and quicker than I would ever have expected for a phone.

4. Connects with everything, does everything, if you're willing to work out how.

You are asking the wrong question, surely. The E90 is not a Communicator, it is a big smartphone with a querty keyboard pretending to be a Communicator.

The question should be either how do we persuade Nokia to make a real Communicator or which device from another manufacturer comes closest?

I have owned Communicators right through from the 9000i and the E90 is a con.

The E90 is my first Communicator, and I think you're wrong in your assessment.

For one thing, Nokia invented the word "Communicator", so they are entitled to use it in any way they see fit. Secondly, if Nokia had not based the E90 on S60, it simply wouldn't have existed at all, once it was clear that S80 was not going to survive. I for one am glad Nokia made the decision they did.

Maybe the N900 will be Communicator-like in use, but I have my doubts. And uUnless the range of software available for Maemo drastically improves, there'll be even less good stuff than there is for S60, and that's pretty poor compared to ie. the iPhone.

i`ll be more than happy to say later on that E90 was not a comunicator and Nokia did a good decision by droping s60 and putting MAEMO on N900 communicator.

e90 is not a real communicator as no proper fax, calendar, contact manager.

rest my case.

If Nokia didn't used S60 for the E90, a lot less would be sold.
I had the 9500 before and it's was really weird if you were used to S60 but I loved the formfactor of the 9500 so it is really great to bring the best worlds to one device in my situation. When the E90 was with S80, I wouldn't know if I bought one.

But the thing Nokia had to do was to develop a E90 S60 and a E90 S80 edition.

What do you think of the N97 or N900? Will it be a good device to replace the E90?
What disturbs me is the touchscreen and the weird keyboard... I hope they stop again with making touchscreen phones but who am I...
