Just a quick note to say there is no graphics co-processor (as there was in the N95 N95 8GB). However the real world impact of this is open to debate - (in other words I don't really think this matters)...

I'm not sure what processor / platform the N85 is on. Looks like it does have a dedicated DSP (audio chip) though.

USB location?

There is one design flaw I can see on the N85 - with the USB being on the top of the phone, charging whilst the phone is in a cradle on the dash of car is going to be very odd and very tricky, as well as adding strain the port. I use my N95 and Garmin XT for navigating several times a week and can see this being a bit of a pain were I to replace my aging N95 with the N85...

Interesting thought. I liked the position when I saw it - easy to have it sit on your desk, but thinking about it... well maybe its not so good.

Isn't N95-8GB bettter than N85

I am considering whether I should purchase N95-8GB or should wait for N85.
N85 seems to have many advantages; it has better battery life, better screen quality. It can be charged through USB. Probably its GPS is better. It has slightly better audio quality and it has FP2. Also, it is much like a phone than a brick. But on the other hand N95-8GB has got a bigger screen (0.2" makes a difference) and amazing 128 MB RAM. The chipset STn8815 of N85 seems comparable to OMAP 2420 of N95-8GB (except for the hardware 3D accelerator). Price vise these two are comparable (probably when N85 will start shipping, N-95 8GB will be slightly cheaper than N85)
I have not heard any N95-8GB user complaining about it. Steve himself had considered N95-8GB as the best smartphone ever made (but that was a year ago).
Don't you think that 128 MB of N95-8GB vs. 70 MB of N85 alone makes N95-8GB superior to N85?

This phone looks great, I was wanting to upgrade to the N96 or iphone, but this is slimmer and has everything I want and more.

Its gunna be a big upgrade from my Fat n80.

One thing that i didn't see in the user manual was a torch function?!

There wasn't on on the n80 and as i understand it, not on the n95 either. I had a SE W800i a while back which had the same twin LED flash that the new n series phone are going to have...

WHY cant nokia add in a torch function?! it seems so easy and frustratingly simple to do... yet they dont offer it. Does anyone know if there is a legitimate reason?

Well, on N80 its possible to add a Torsch by third part software... that could be the same for N85!

Wink buttons

are the buttons 'touch buttons' or just normal 'press buttons'?
and is it a touch screen as well?

it looks like such a nice phone! but it seems expensive..
start saving.

ordered mine yesterday! :-)

I like this phone - big bright screen and (hopefully) good battery life are key things.
5MP camera is OK too. Standard USB cables (finally) is about time also.
Like the idea of the FM transmitter - A2DP is still not too available in cars, and so makes it useful when traveling and in hire cars, etc. Also means Bluetooth does not get too overworked for calls and any GPS use :-)

Looks like my trusty Motorola Z10 will be going in my mobile phone "memory box"...

We had the same issue at Motorola, for our Z8, and the reason given was due to heat build up - the LED would get really hot and maybe melt the phone / lens / etc. An idea was to use a lower level, or even fast off/on use, but that was rejected for fear people might have a epileptic fit (flash would essentially be strobing).

For the Z10 phone however, they just added it in (hidden away for use in camcorder mode), so not sure really what the fuss was all about on the Z8 model - time to program it and get it approved was more likely the issue I guess! :-)

n85 'cellular radios in two different variants'

Hi.

Am new to this group so forgive me if this seem like a stupid question.

I have been waiting for a long time for teh N96 to come out and now it has. Its different handling the phone from reading the specs online.

I have a n95 that i want to replace. After handling the n96. Am not so sure now. After reading teh specs on the n85.. The model seems pretty much the same as the 95 apart from the obvious that everyone had said...

i will be traveling to Hong kong to buy my next phone. Mainly because the language packs that come with the phone. English, tradional and simplified chinese as i can read both.

my only concern is the radio signal.. I know from the past i could buy a phone H.K and use in u.k no problems.... I dont use 3g video calls or for network connections.

would that affect my usage in the U.K ?

thank you
