E61 manual backlight on/off?

I read thru the entire manual but found no way to simply force the backlight on or off on my E61. Can't believe there isn't a manual override... even my Blackberry had one! I find there are many situations when either the backlight comes on and actually makes it more difficult to see the keys, or when it won't come on when you really want it to.
