It happened only yesterday Notty

I believe he's trying to beef up his street cred

Or because he's started pooing nails ...... take your pick

However, i'm sure that we will all continue to read and enjoy his informative posts, and just because he will, from now on, be referred to as Ironarse - i'm sure it does not diminish his standing in the forum ...... ok, well, maybe just a little bit (i'm not enjoying this at all but i anticipate the backlash any moment now )

I you really Ian

Maybe he's been lifting weights and has bulked up, so in line with his new body he needs a new tougher persona.

Just for the record, my ringtones are in MP3 format so, if people are already prepared to trim their ringtones, they may not need to convert them to AAC. I started trimming them years ago, as I figured there was no need to have them any longer since the phone will only ring for 30 seconds before diverting to voicemail.

That's interesting zxon.

One of the times I would find the ring tone reverting to default was directly after a reboot (switching on), something that quite a few people complain of.

As you can see from the screenshot, I have two versions of my ringtone, which is the pretty basic ring tone from the TV series Wallander with Kenneth Branagh.

One is in .aac format at 331kb and the other is in .mp3 at only 104kb.

I rebooted my phone three times with each one activated and then immediately rang my mobile number.

With the .aac ring tone there was no problem.

However, the smaller .mp3 defaulted to the Nokia ring tone.

If I then rang a 2nd time, after reboot, on the .mp3 tone it would play.

Therefore, from my findings, I would have to say that it's better to err on the .aac side.

Hmm, I decided to check more thoroughly to see if I suffer from the same problem. My General profile ringtone is the Top Gear tune (aka a revamped version of the All-man Brothers Band's "Jessica") and, to test this out, I set a ringtone to my home number's contact as the theme tune for Have I Got News For You (which will henceforth be referred to as HIGNFY - pronounced "hig-na-fee" - cos the name's just too darned long). Both ringtones are 30 second MP3s and stored on Mass Memory. The Top Gear tune is 569Kb and the HIGNFY tune is 475Kb.

Rebooted the phone and, as the home screen was still sorting itself out, I rang it from my home number. The ringtone used? Top Gear... and it didn't show my name on the screen either, just my number. I hung up and tried again, and then it worked as normal, playing the HIGNFY tune and showing my name alongside the number. I'm guessing that, in this case, the phone simply hadn't loaded up the Contact list yet so didn't know "who" called, so no name was shown and the wrong ringtone was used.

Not sure if it's worth mentioning, but there's no photo assigned to this contact entry.

Thanks for the input zxon.

As the Tesco ad says, "Every little bit helps!"

What you have just described is along the lines of what I, and others, have been experiencing (except in my case I only have the one ringtone for everyone accompanied by "Say callers name").

Could I ask your indulgence when you have 5/10 mins and ask you to to convert the HIGNFY ring tone to .aac format and repeat your experiment please.

Cheers!

The Tesco ad says "Every little helps" - Ian Ross would never have made such a faux pas, but then .... he's lithe and smart
