Has anyone found out whether it's more costly dwnld data from GPRS connection vs a normal 14.4k connection on my 9210?

I cannot seem to understand all the hype of GPRS when I think it may cost me more to connect to the internet than using my normal 14.4k connection to an ISP.

Any comments from 9210 users?

I think you'll find that the 9210 does not actually support GPRS. You're most likely getting 9.6kbs through a normal connection rather than 14.4k, unless you've got something clever running,

What you CAN get, but only on Orange in the UK and only on (any) monthy plan, is High Speed Data, which is 28.8k and costs 2 or 3 times as much as the normal data connection.

Got High Speed Data at 28.8k here for normal call price! But if i want to use isdn High Speed Data at 43.2k then i pay extra. So ask you service provider for their prices.[ This Message was edited by KayonLord on 2002-06-12 2209 ]

Thanks for replying. I'm in Singapore using a 14K connection speed although I can't comfirm this. My mobile service provider assured me its at 14.4K using the 9210.

Its been so long I can't remember how fast/slow at 9.6K connection looks . WAP and WWW connection seems pretty OK when compared to browsing in a Revo.

HSDC (43K) has been pull by my service provider saying they won't deploy with GPRS round the corner.

Hence the original question - any info on your experiences on GPRS cost vs normal connection?

Regards

Hi there.

I support HSCSD and GPRS on the UK Orange network.

GPRS packages offered are
1/2MB @ 4per month
5MB @ 15
10MB @ 25
and higher.

To dial a 14.4k connection to 0845 prefix, usually 12pp/m peak and 6pp/m.
28.8k would cost 20pp/m to our ISP and 25 to any other number, including freephone.

To answer which method is more cost effective, it depends on your application really. POP mail would be more effecient over GPRS, but web browsing would soon become expensive on a low package. GPRS would be charged pro-rata once the bundle is used, meaning the higher the package the more cost effective it is.

Plus of course, GPRS is running up to 40k on our network at the moment and you pay for the amount of data transferred and not how long it takes to get it.

Hope this is useful. A.Support.Operator

I use High Speed 28.8 at the normal price of a call with Orange. But I haven't been able to use the isdn connection, though Orange service said I didn't have to activate anything.

For the 43k u need to dial up to a cell number!
Call your isp to see if they have one!
Or ask Orange if the have a cell number dial up.
The Cell Service profiders here have them.
And some (small some) of the internet service providers too!
Costs abit more but it rocks!
