Angry Automatic network selection

Hi guys,
I bought the new Nokia 3230 and there is a thing that drives me crazy!
I live at the border between Italy and France. I have a french SIM from SFR, the french mobile operator. My previous mobile phone, nokia 7210, was able to choose automatically the roaming network when I was in Italy, but was also so smart to come back to the home network if in some places both the operators, the homing and the roaming, was present.
Now with 3230 it's like if it doesn't change the operator till the roaming network is unreachable, without care about the precence of the homing one!

There is a way in your opinion to make this possible? Some sort of pooling to discover if the network is available, I think this was the way used by the 7210.

Thanks!
